We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Contreras and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca, why did you pursue a creative career?
Honestly, I didn’t pursue a creative career; it pursued me. I believe every person should always be in some mode of creating. Whether you are creating a family, some new art, a living space, a garden, an atmosphere for a business, or whatever your dreams are presenting to you; we are placed here to C R E A T E.
I’ve been creating since a young age and I’ve always been flooded with so many art ideas. When I discovered pyrography, I noticed that there was something special about it. It’s almost as if there’s a ‘peaceful magic’ about the process of pyrography that allows me to actually focus and finish my projects in a special way. This ‘peaceful magic’ I recognize as the five elements: EARTH, FIRE, WATER, AIR & SPIRIT.

EARTH, represented as wood
FIRE, the heat from my pyrography pen
WATER, comes from the moisture of the fresh wood
AIR, present in the smoke from the wood burning

All together these elements connect to SPIRIT. Being conscious of these energetic and elemental connections with my art definity drives me to create from a conscious and purposeful space. This is why I say this creative career pursued me; because it’s bigger than my human desires. It’s part of my spiritual quest to spread positivity to as many people as possible. Creating art is one of my ways.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Pyrography (wood burning) requires me to be very patient and intentional with each mark. There is no painting over or erasing in this type of art. I see the polarity in life where being patient and intentional with my words and actions can play a major role in the outcomes of my reality. Another lesson is that all ‘mistakes’ have an opportunity to become beautiful if we are open to accept & allow it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take a friend hiking with all the diverse hiking options we have in Los Angeles. From a coastal mountain experience in the Santa Monica Mountains, to discovering a waterfall in the San Gabriel Mountains, or even experiencing rocky views at Joshua Tree National Park. There will be a different nature experience every day of the week and of course we would eat at many of the wonderful restaurants LA has to offer and stop at venues with live music. Yelp is my favorite tool in finding great dining spots.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shout out to my spiritual family. Through their words of wisdom, their insight and creative ways of being; you each have inspired me to be a better person and to be my authentic self.
