Meet Sophia Mitrokostas | Global Sustainability and Sustainable Food Systems Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Mitrokostas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The component of risk taking in the decision making process makes me stop and think, “What are all of the possible outcomes? Will the reward be worth it?”. Often, when contemplating a risk I think about all of the things that could go wrong, and decide if the end result will be greater than any possible setbacks along the way.
In my life, I’m very prone to taking risks- I tend to follow my gut and trust my intuition above all else and it has lead me to unexpected places and paths that otherwise would not come to be if I decided to play it safe.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My background in global sustainability, food systems, and regenerative agriculture is blended with my skills in integration, design and networking. I am proud to say that I have been able to take this blend and apply it to many different organizations and startups. When working with others, I frame myself as a “sustainability accelerator”- I take a look at what someone is doing and see where it is best to implement more sustainable practices and habits. My main goal as a sustainability accelerator is to show others how easy and important it is to incorporate systems that make for healthier people and a healthier planet, no matter the industry.
Along the way I’ve learned that there is always room for improvement, regardless of if everything is functioning perfectly. There are always ways to create better balance and connection with people to the planet. Sometimes, the best time to make improvements is when things to be working the way they are because there is more room for error, less risk and greater reward.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Gloomy day in California? We’re heading to The Last Bookstore in Downtown Los Angeles to weave through mazes of books and records. For lunch, we’re enjoying vegan and organic fares offered at Gracias Madre in West Hollywood (my favorite dish is the Madre Bowl and sipping on the L.A Princessa or Planeta Azul). To really capture the SoCal culture, we’re spending the afternoon shopping at Melrose Trading Post. For a nice evening, we’re walking under the bright red lanterns of Little Tokyo, snacking on Papaya Mochi from Fugetsu-Do Bakery Shop and marveling at the beautiful creations Hauser + Wirth Gallery has to offer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest fan is my father. Fortunately (and sometimes unfortunately!) my father raised me to be fiercely independent, open minded, impartial to judgement and bold in my decision making. With his background in politics and community enrichment, he has taught me to understand various social perspectives, listen to others and take what I have learned to then make up my own mind. I take a lot of pride in knowing I have a very balanced and well-rounded moral compass, to his credit.
