Meet Kyle Fisch | Finish Carpenter & General Contractor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Fisch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always enjoyed building, creative expression, and creating something from scratch. I wanted to have more control over the projects I contribute to, and try and incorporate some of my creative ideas towards improving the community I am a part of. In the home improvement industry not all projects are glamorous, but professionally I felt a lot of my talent was not properly utilized while I was previously employed. I have worked for numerous employers over the past decade, each had their strengths and weaknesses, however I knew I would never be happy until I was on my own. It seemed many of my ideas or designs fell on a deaf ear, and the only way I saw this changing was if I became self-employed. Since I began my own business, I have had the opportunity to work with some great clients, and appreciate my creative approach to the work and services I provide them.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is geared towards custom and quality finish carpentry and custom remodeling. While working on job sites and in peoples’ residences pays the bills, I do woodworking projects in my free time and look to hopefully expand my business to commission pieces in the future. This would be when I have a wood shop to work in full time, which would also let me create more personalized and custom creations for customers. I base all of my business on a few simple ideas; honesty, communication, punctuality, and doing the job right the first time. It seems in the contracting business there are so many who fail to deliver the professionalism clients look for when they hire us. My obstacles over the last 10 years were the lack of professional support I received, and the lack of principals I based my business on from previous employers. I did my best to overcome these obstacles by always thinking about the end goals, what I could learn from each particular scenario, and seeing the positive side of any negative circumstances. Through my professional career I have learned the importance of prompt communication in regards to scheduling, honesty, and the value of doing the job right the first time. Even though it was difficult (physically and mentally) for me to get where I am today, I love my work, and I feel my passion shows in the quality of services I deliver. I pay attention to all the small details in my work and go the extra mile for all of my clients, which I feel separates the tradesmen from the craftsmen.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The great part about San Diego is the diverse mix of cultures throughout each neighborhood in the city. We live next to the coast, desert, and the mountains simultaneously; allowing for any type of outdoor activity. I try to spend as much time outdoors as I can, there are always great spots within walking distance anywhere in the city. While I have lived out here most of my life, I still enjoy going to the “touristy” spots from time to time. The San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Wild Animal Park, Old Town, and Balboa Park are all great day trips. The Embarcadero is a great spot to see some of San Diego’s history, right next to downtown with unlimited dining options and entertainment. Every beach is always a great spot to hangout; from Coronado all the way up to Carlsbad, each neighborhood has their own vibe. I enjoy going on hikes throughout the county, Torrey Pines State Park is probably one of the best areas to visit in town for a casual scenic stroll. Our local cuisine has something for everyone and every culture, and with so many great places it is hard to name just a few!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mom and Dad have always been my biggest supporters and in the last few years my partner, Izzy, as well. Growing up my parents taught me the value of hard work, the importance of learning and personal development, and community activism. They supported me both during school and throughout all of my extracurricular activities, always pushing me to improve and put my best foot forward. While we do not share similar professions, they have always done their best to encourage my professional growth and help me through stressful weeks at work. During the last few years my partner Izzy has helped me stay focused on my goals of starting my own business, while supporting my passion for woodworking and building creative creations. While it was easy for me to get lost in the day-to-day monotony of previous jobs, my support reminded me of what I was working towards, and did their best to provide another perspective related to whatever issues I was facing.
