We had the good fortune of connecting with Katherine Caro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katherine, how do you think about risk?
Risk makes us or breaks us. Without taking risks, I couldn’t get out of my comfort zone. If I don’t get out of my comfort zone, then I’ll be the same person without growth. That’s something I don’t want. When it comes to photography and content creation, clients’ styles, trends, and preferences change, so I need to constantly learn.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Around 2016, I applied to be a photojournalist at The Adamson Chronicle, my alma mater’s official student publication. Fortunately, I could make it; from there, I learned about sports photography, had access to university games, and took photos at the courtside together with sports photographers from media channels! It was such a great experience. I am thankful to be a part of that organization. When I graduated in 2017, I made photography my side hustle; I would take birthday, wedding, and basketball photos for the company I was working with. From 2019-2021, I was in Bahrain, I met a group of photographers that helped me learn more about portrait photography, one time, I also had the opportunity to take photos of Bahrain’s National Basketball team. Now that I am in San Diego, I would like to help military families by taking good family photos. I understand the struggle of being far from the family from time to time, so I want to be a part of their special moments together, by taking good photos. About being a content creator, I just started creating User Generated Content or UGC content late last year. I was approached by a company to make a few videos for products, then I just kept doing it until more businesses/ companies approach me to help them market their products and services. Being a freelance photographer helped me connect with a lot of businesses because I understand what they want to grow. This is one of the reasons why I always build a healthy connection with the brands I work with.

Of course, everything wasn’t easy, especially as the eldest sibling, my mom is a widow, so I would need to consider a lot of things before choosing photography as a profession. I overcame challenges by still doing what I want whenever I have time. I’ve learned that dedication is everything in building yourself.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always want to thank The Adamson Chronicle batch 2016-2019, because this student publication helped me grow as a photographer. I learned sports photography when I joined them, and I am using what I’ve learned until now. Shoutout to Premier South Bay too! They trusted me as their social media intern, photographer, and content creator. The support of the team is just overwhelming!
