Hi Kuya William, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I was considering launching my own business, I knew that I wanted to create something that would not only be successful but also have a positive impact on the world. As I explored different options, I became increasingly interested in the potential of leveraging tax incentives to create a business that would not require significant out-of-pocket expenses.

President Obama once said, ‘Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.’ This quote resonated with me, and I realized that if I wanted to create positive change in the world, I needed to take action and pursue my business idea.

At the same time, I was inspired by the Obama administration’s focus on supporting minority business owners in marginalized communities on a national scale. President Obama also said, ‘We need to keep making our streets safer and our criminal justice system fairer – our homeland more secure, our world more peaceful and sustainable for the next generation. We’re not done yet.’ This quote highlighted the importance of working towards a better future for all, and I knew that I wanted my business to play a part in that.

Moreover, I strongly believe in the importance of giving back to the community and leaving a lasting legacy impact. President Obama also preached, ‘The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.’ This quote resonates with me because it captures the power of taking action to create positive change.

I sought to build a business that not only provided value to its customers but also made a meaningful difference in the world. By combining my passion for social impact with my interest in tax incentives, I was able to develop a business idea that would allow me to create a positive legacy while also achieving financial success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kaizen Group International is a business consulting firm that incorporates Buddhist principles into entrepreneurship. As a Nichiren disciple and Reiki master, I apply the values of compassion, courage, and wisdom to my work, helping businesses and individuals to reach their full potential and create positive change in the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting San Diego, I wouldn’t just show them the typical tourist spots. I would take them on a journey to discover the city’s hidden gems and culinary delights on a week-long foodie adventure exploring some of the most beautiful and exciting attractions around San Diego County.

Our adventure would begin with an early morning sunrise Yoga and Outrigger paddling session from Mission Bay to Point Loma. This is a great way to start the day, as we would take in the breathtaking views of the city skyline and surrounding bluffs while getting a fantastic workout on the water. Paddling in Mission Bay is an exhilarating experience and offers a unique perspective of San Diego that cannot be missed.

Afterwards, we would head to Point Loma to explore the tide pools. This is a must-see attraction, as the tide pools offer a glimpse into the diverse marine life that calls the San Diego coastline home. We could spend hours discovering the unique creatures that inhabit the rocky shores and take in the incredible coastal scenery.

One of the highlights of our trip would be walking the boardwalk from South Mission Beach to Pacific Beach. This lively stretch of the San Diego coastline is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering beautiful ocean views, unique shops, and delicious seafood restaurants. We would stop for lunch at one of the many fantastic restaurants along the way, taking in the laid-back California lifestyle.

As the day winds down, we would head to JRDNS Tower 23 near the Crystal Pier to watch the sunset. This iconic location offers some of the most spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, making it the perfect spot to relax and unwind with a cocktail in hand. It is truly a breathtaking experience that we wouldn’t want to miss.

For a more upscale experience, we would visit The University Club Atop Symphony Towers. This exclusive private club offers stunning panoramic views of the city and harbor, along with exceptional dining and amenities. Sipping cocktails while taking in the stunning views and enjoying the luxurious surroundings would be an unforgettable experience.

Another must-see location is La Jolla Cove. This beautiful area is known for its natural habitat for sea lions and other local wildlife. We could stroll along the cliffs and take in the breathtaking ocean views or head down to the beach to get up close and personal with the adorable sea lions.

Moving on to Coronado Island, we would visit Peohes for some delicious seafood and cocktails. This waterfront restaurant offers some of the best views of the San Diego skyline and is a favorite among locals. It is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a night out with friends.

We would also visit INsideOUT in Hillcrest, which is known for its creative cocktails and vibrant atmosphere. This trendy spot offers some of the best drinks in the city, along with a diverse menu of small plates and entrees.

Finally, we would take in a dinner and show at Lips, the iconic San Diego drag queen restaurant and nightclub. This unique venue offers delicious food, cocktails, and some of the best drag shows in the city. It is a truly unforgettable experience that we wouldn’t want to miss.

San Diego is truly a city that has something for everyone, and I am excited to share its many attractions and adventures with my best friend. From the stunning coastline and breathtaking sunsets to the vibrant nightlife and cultural attractions, San Diego is a destination that is not to be missed.

Finally, we would take in a concert and enjoy a dinner at Humphreys By The Bay. This venue offers an intimate outdoor setting and has hosted some of the biggest names in music. On Sundays, they offer a fantastic brunch with live music that is not to be missed.

San Diego truly has something for everyone, from its stunning coastline and breathtaking sunsets to its vibrant nightlife and diverse culinary scene. I am excited to share the many attractions and adventures of San Diego with all my friends that visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am grateful for this opportunity to recognize the impact of a few individuals and organizations who have inspired and motivated me on my journey to success. One person who has had a significant impact on my outlook on life is Oprah Winfrey. Her grace and determination to overcome obstacles and achieve her dreams have been a source of inspiration for me. As Oprah once said, “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”

In addition to Oprah, I want to acknowledge the teachings of Anthony Robbins, whose book “Awaken the Giant Within” was a game-changer for me. It was through his teachings that I first learned about the concept of CANEI (Continuous and Never-Ending Improvement), which is derived from the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen. This concept has become a guiding principle in my life and in my business, reminding me that there is always room for improvement and that excellence is a continuous process.

I also want to give a special shoutout to my fraternity, Phi Sigma Kappa. Joining this organization was a turning point in my life and instilled in me the principles of scholarship, leadership, and service. The brotherhood and support I received from my Phi Sigma Kappa brothers have been invaluable, and I am proud to carry these values with me throughout my personal and professional life.

Moreover, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for my partner, David Shaeffer, who has been my rock for the past 14 years. His unconditional love and devotion have been unwavering through our trials and tribulations, and together we have overcome many obstacles. His ongoing support has been a critical factor in my personal and professional growth.

Lastly, I want to recognize the first gay, partial Filipino-American Mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria, for his unwavering dedication to serving his community and advocating for social justice. His leadership and commitment to making a positive impact have been a source of inspiration for me and have motivated me to use my own skills and resources to create positive change in the world.

All of these individuals and organizations have played a significant role in shaping who I am today and the values that I hold dear. Their wisdom, guidance, and example have motivated me to strive for excellence, to never give up on my dreams, and to make a positive impact in the world. And that is why I have incorporated the principle of CANEI into my business name, Kaizen Group International, as a daily reminder that there is always room for improvement and that excellence is a continuous journey, not a destination.
