We had the good fortune of connecting with Malani Lovings and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malani, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are how I’ve established my business & reputation to be honest. Bare in mind these are calculated risks—at least the majority of the time—so I assess the perceived amount of time & effort required to see a beneficial yield, and then dive into opportunities with plans & goals in mind— it’s likely the Capricorn in me that does so. I’m a lover of adventure and seeing a journey through for the sake of it’s lessons & rewards. That’s where risks come into play with my business, as there’s no way to calculate guaranteed success. I’m always optimistic I’m capable of anything, especially obtaining the goals others think I can not…so I dive deep into risks to bring about necessary change. Starting my business was a risk, competing in showcases was a risk, meeting new people is often full of risks, all of which I’ve successfully navigated & thankfully has led to me enjoy a thriving career in photography! Live fearlessly because comfort breeds contentment & risks lead to rewards!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Everything regarding my career begins with stepping out of fear & with faith! Due to a rare condition, I was faced with potentially accepting the reality of never having pursued my passion of photography & it honestly demolished my spirit. When I was given what felt like a second opportunity at life, I had to dedicate my efforts to living without fear & run the risk of starting my business…before long, that decision with intentional dedication to my craft, quickly transformed into me thinking almost daily, “wow, I’m so blessed to run a business doing what I absolutely exist on the plane to do” and today, I am still overwhelmingly grateful to be doing what energizes my spirit and inspires me to love & live ambitiously. This is why my photography experience differs from others, and why my sessions are not “cookie-cutter”. Each session is a unique, dedicated, experience as I incorporate an attention to detail unlike others—from the individual consultations to realize your vision, to the incorporation of items of sentimental value, and convenient options to add an in-house videographer, posing coach, makeup artist, or have a set custom designed to realize your concept. Every client is Art to me and I provide them a luxurious experience to acknowledge that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am always lacing up my shoes to visit Cowles Mountain whenI need an invigorating hiking experience or Annie’s Canyon since I am an Earth-loving person & the more nature I can (responsibly) surround myself with, the better, since I draw a lot of my inspiration for my sessions from nature. Afterwards, a visit to Farmer’s Table in Little Italy is definitely a must to refuel, followed by a trip to Uncle Biff’s California Killer cookies on University Ave. because I’ve earned it. Finally, I typically take friends & family to Old Town for shopping, live performances, culture & drinks. The area is full of exciting people in a relaxed environment that are ready to chat & have a good time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I’m humbled & grateful and more than anything INSPIRED & MOTIVATED by everyone that has helped to solidify the foundation of Wildflower Photography. San Diego, you have been such an integral part of our identity & mission to be seen & take up space, I truly thank you. In addition, I would also like to thank my gorgeous, dedicated husband who is not only my videographer, but also the best person for the job of wrangling our four kids for family adventures while I’m booked! Within the creative community, I’m most inspired as a female photographer by these empowering female creatives: Tchanavia Lastie of Black Queen Photography, Didi of Dialicious Designs, Brenda Suarez of Heal Up with Bee. Fashion Model Selina and Full Figured Model Domenic, and Brittany, Creator of Planted Affirmations and creator & cohost of Living Millenial Productions. Finally, I’d also like to express deep appreciation to model Micah Queja, words aren’t full enough to express gratitude for the stellar energy & talent that he brings to every session!
