Meet Katie Restrepo | Travel Blogger

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Restrepo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my blogging business was to figure out a way to help parents travel with their kids.
Too many times I heard “It’s too hard to travel with young kids, wait until they’re older,” and It made me sad at all the memories they were missing out on.
I thought through how to best use my experiences to encourage and inspire others to go on adventures with their babies and toddlers.
Blogging seemed like a great way to document my travels with my family in a way that showed others how they could do it too.
Reviews, gear, destination inspiration, and tips on traveling filled my blog post and social media content ideas. From there it was just learning the logistics of how to structure the business to get the information out there.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Starting a blog was not easy. Finding the time to learn how to blog, learn how to run a business, learn how to market and sell- all of that was new to me.
The writing and photo editing came easily, and even that has been trial and error.
Writing blog posts is completely different than writing poetry or novels, which is the type of writing I had always done for fun. It’s more technical while being more casual at the same time.
I always feel like I’m finding out new formulas and testing a new hypothesis. It’s a science.
It seems simple, but I always get so proud when one of my articles pops up on the first page of Google when people search for travel details. It means the formatting for the information worked- people can find my information that will help them answer their questions.
I pride myself on using modern techniques to structure my own experiences. I can curate information for people to have one stop to answer all their questions on particular content and give them real feedback, and real experiences to support that information.
Plus the creative side of me still loves to tell stories. People want a story that connects them to the experience.
I think my blog posts and social media content do just that. It allows the user not just to follow along on my adventures, but put themselves in my position and realize what they can do to have that adventure too.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best recommendation? Go for a hike. It’s the best way to see an area. After that find a local museum or attraction to visit and ask those who work there for food recommendations. We went on a trip to the Bay Area in California to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We ended up planning a few different hikes including visiting the Mystery Spot and the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.
The Mystery Spot is a fun experience of a house that defies gravity. The tour is full of physics tricks and jokes, and there’s a great hike in the forest nearby.
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is an amazing place to see the giant redwood trees and there’s a great train tour you can do, plus homemade ice cream sandwiches in their gift shop.
The day we visited the aquarium we asked for a local restaurant recommendation. We ended up eating at the Fish Hopper which has floor-to-ceiling windows right by the table. As we ate, we saw seals, sea lions, and otters swimming in the bay. It was amazing
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband has been my biggest supporter. He always shares my posts and cheers me on with my latest, craziest ideas. Even if he doesn’t quite understand SEO or why I get so excited about a good keyword.
He’s even started taking a more active role in assisting me with my social media so I can focus more on the blog articles.
From late nights writing before deadlines to helping film for content collaborations, he’s flexible and patient. He knows how much this business means to me and takes it seriously.
