Meet Lex Holley | Cake Artist & Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Holley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lex, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This isn’t an easy question to answer because it’s so personal; everyone is different, and there is not one thing for everyone that says, “okay it’s time to pack it up.” but I will say I am so thankful for this season in my life because it has taught me that facing adversity or failure in something that you love isn’t an indication to quit, it’s often a sign to lean on God for courage and wisdom. There were plenty of times I wanted to give up because I felt inadequate. I didn’t see the point of doing something if I wasn’t the very best at it, I tried to talk myself into working for someone else, and it never seemed to fit. The idea of running my own cake business wouldn’t leave me, no matter how many times I tried to leave it. That’s when I knew I had to continue pursuing my business boldly because God has intended my cake business to be a platform for His goodness, granting me the opportunity to bless others.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I want the world to know about my story is that if I can do it, you can do it! I started baking over ten years ago and am just now pursuing my passion professionally. Fear paralyzed me; I would never try anything I knew I couldn’t succeed on the first try. I would be lying if I said the move from fear to faith was easy. Still, if you’re passionate about something and you know you were put on this earth to do it, seek God; it won’t get easier, and if I’m being honest, you may see more adversity, but there is no power like the power of the God of the universe. He has been my security through this intimidating journey.
Whenever I start to reconsider this journey, I think of all the people God has intended me to bless with the overflow of my business, and it rekindles my fire. I’ve often wanted to quit because it was too stressful or I felt inadequate. The only thing that keeps me going is God’s encouragement and reassurance that I am the woman for the job, reminding me that the success of my business is not about me but the others He will send me to help through mentorship, scholarships, and immeasurably more blessings.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an animal lover, so the San Diego Safari Park and whale watching would be a must. I’m also a girl who appreciates some good brunch, so we would have to stop by Breakfast Republic before starting the day. For dinner, I would take you out to Cafe Coyote for some amazing tacos and margaritas. San Diego is such a beautiful city; there is plenty to do if you’re a planner or more of a go-with-the-flow person. I can guarantee you’ll never be bored.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my sister. She has to be one of the most selfless human beings on the planet. I am truly blessed to have her as my sister and best friend. I would be lost without her. There have been many nights where I’ve had to stay up baking orders. She was beside me, keeping me company so I didn’t fall asleep, packing orders, and doing my dishes. Thank you Tori, for all your love and support; you’ve been my A1 since day one.
