We asked some of the city’s leading artists and creatives to tell us about how they decided to pursue an artistic or creative career. We’ve shared some highlights below.

Zoriana Lylo-Otkovych | Artist, historian and art expert, designer, owner of the KOLO Art studio

In my case, it could not be otherwise. I was born and raised in an artistic family. My father was a famous artist, my uncle was an art critic, and my aunt was also an artist. From an early age, I saw paintings on the walls and many books about art around me. I visited all the museums in our city several times. When I was younger, I moved to the United States from Brazil with my family. I learned to speak English when I was in elementary school, but coming from two different cultures and learning to speak two different languages taught me the power and importance of nonverbal communication. I love art and storytelling because it allows us to relate to each other more deeply without having to use any words at all. I pursued an art career in the hopes of bridging gaps in communication and developing the skills necessary to express myself in a more meaningful way to others. Read more>>

It really wasn’t a choice for me. I have music and songs running through through my mind at all times. I really became fascinated with electronic music in my teens. The 80’s was a brilliant time for that type of music. I had the opportunity to become friends with many talented musicians over the years.
