Where are you from and how has it impacted you?

Even if you are from the same neighborhood as someone else, you might still be coming from different places. Where you are from is a complicated question and it elicits complicated, but interesting and thought-provoking responses. We’ve shared some of those responses below.
I was born in Gardena, California at Gardena Memorial Hospital and spent most of my life in Hawthorne, a South Bay city located between Torrance and Inglewood. Growing up in this diverse area, I was exposed to two different cultures. On one side, my family hailed from the South, specifically Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. I am from a small town in Upstate New York where everyone knows everyone and family values are strong. I was raised by my grandparents and I think that is what start my love for being around the elderly. It was their kind and loving ways that showed me how different it was to be loved unconditionally by a grandparent. At a young age I learned how to cook many family recipes, how to store vegetables in the root cellar, how to grow some or your own foods and really how to have a strong and honest work ethic. I was born in orange, California but have lived and grew up in Anaheim, all my life. I had a struggling upbringing dealing with poverty, troubled parents, and navigating life while battling an undiagnosed neurological disorder. I have had to work ten times harder than anyone I knew due to mental illness. I know now that all my struggles paid off for I now know who I truly want to be and have strived to try and get there.
