We had the good fortune of connecting with Xochitl Salcido and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Xochitl, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Business has taught me that relationships are everything. In my line of work it is imperative to continue to cultivate relationships with families, children, mentors and fellow entrepreneurs. Without community we can not survive. It is important to have strong boundaries and an open heart. There will be those who are only out for themselves. You have to be able to recognize those people, maintain a community over competition spirit without being taken advantage of.

What should our readers know about your business?
Kids Korner Explorers was a concept that came to fruition at the end of 2019 when my son was a homeschooled preschooler in need of a community. Using my education and experience in teaching, I launched a science and sensory enrichment program at a small community center in City Heights. The goal was not only to homeschool, but to build a community in which we could learn and grow together. When COVID shut down the center, Kids Korner was put on the shelf.

When given the opportunity to relaunch that is exactly what I did. The road has been full of detours and bumps. From losing venues, increased financial costs and figuring out the balance between work and life. It has been a hard, but very rewarding journey.

What I learned along the way is the key to success is the determination to never give up. Many times I tell myself this is the only option. There is no plan B. When I think of it that way, it ignites a fire in my passion and dream to keep pursuing no matter what comes my way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a huge science and history buff. San Diego is so rich in both of those things.

My top places to visit are:

Cabrillo point tide pools
Old Town
Seaport Village (spooky)
The Natural History Museum
The Fleet Science Center
Birch Aquarium
Balboa Park
Mission Trails
Lake Murray
Cowles Mountain

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout-out goes to my inner circle. Although I have a large circle of friends. My inner circle is quite small. These women who I have known for years and some over a decade have seen and been with me through various stages of life. They are the women who publicly I do no wrong, but privately will tell me about myself. When I have been beyond broken they have picked up the pieces and helped mend my heart. In times of success they have been my biggest cheerleaders because they have seen all the sacrifices and hard work. I wouldn’t be where I’m at without them!
