We had the good fortune of connecting with Will Torrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Will, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The process we implemented was based on several requirements. First being in an industry that we personally had an interest in. When you start a business, one’s emotional runaway can run thin. Stress will always be lurking, best you find something that you have a sincere passion for. Secondly, was finding a niche market where we could apply innovation and disrupt. Find the problem, then create a solution. Lastly, reoccurring revenue was something that we really wanted to make sure our business model had. Acquisition cost will always be expensive, we so wanted to mitigate that cost as much as possible.

What should our readers know about your business?
Varsity Made provides online merchandise for high schools and organizations across the nation. We look at ourselves as the fanatics for high schools. We provide a wide variety of affordable merchandise, with the fastest delivery times. One of our proudest accomplishments is the amount of money we’ve been able to raise for High Schools. We have raised over 30K for numerous high schools.

High School years are often the most remembered years for kids. Our jackets serve as a memorabilia piece for those formidable years. We take pride in the fact that we’re able to supply an affordable and quality product.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is a great place to host friends. if a friend was visiting the city, I would start off the trip by taking them to my fitness club. Fit Athletic is a great gym to start off the day. We then would take my dog to a local coffee shop or farmers market in Little Italy. Once we’re done exploring the beautiful attractions of Little Italy, we would pop our heads into one of the many watering holes (KEX, Nolita, Princess Pub, Top Sail, etc). We most likely end our day eating at Barbusa, Puesto or Iron side.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is entirely cliche, yet utterly sincere. My family, friends and network have always been the bedrock of my support system. Good and bad, I can always expect an honest opinion of my crazy business ideas. When I’m in a rut, I don’t have to look far for someone to set my head on straight. My boldness and confidence can be attributed to the successful and loving people I surround myself with.
