We had the good fortune of connecting with Veranice Berry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Veranice, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Newton said “an object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion will continue moving.” I believe risk taking applies along the same lines. If I have a brain full of ideas and goals I want to achieve, I must put them in motion and they will continue on. I will say this a lot during this interview, I am a single mother so my daily decisions are huge risks because it is not just me the outcome will affect. Self publishing is a big risk because my books may never take off, a traditional publisher may not want to rebrand my works, and using my own personal funds to create these goals of mine takes away a lot, BUT it is a risk I am willing to take because if what I want to achieve remains at rest, then I have nothing moving forward.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always known that I was sent here to write. There is no doubt about that. So naturally I read and I read a lot. Tolkien, Martin, and Rowling have created worlds that are so detailed, mesmerizing, and leaves permanent traces of their chapters in our brains. I wanted to do the same. I took my love for fiction and action and created a world that is not represented in the real world. I want some hero’s that look like me. I want gods and goddesses and magical worlds and battles with characters that look different from what those amazing writers above have created. An Egyptian Tale Series is an all new, never before done, realm where Melanated hero’s and villains have a world that is not a remake. When children are deciding Halloween costumes amongst the potter and marvel ones, I want them to have more than just black panther. I want the world to know there are writers out here who have created fresh new literature that is not a remake of something already told. This journey so far has not been easy. I have many eye diseases and challenges so reading is hard at times. I work a full time job plus have two children in sports and those challenges build up. I find the time to get a chapter in and then before I know it, a book is complete! I am most excited to complete this series. Like I said, even if my series never takes off, the fact that I completed it means the world to me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh! This is a piece of cheesecake. Let’s go. My friend needs to stay close to me so I am sending them to stay at Lakehouse Hotel and Resort in San Marcos in a lake front cottage. Happy hour at the Grill is where we will begin our shenanigans. Sunset boat rides and pizza and salad at Amalfi will be a great introduction to the week. Next few days we will head south. We are having breakfast in Del Mar at Pacific Breeze Cafe and then lunch down in La Jolla. Dinner will be somewhere in mission. The beach there and all the restaurants will be an action packed day. We will be spending an entire day in Coronado trying new cafes and shopping. By Thursday we are going to Disneyland dressed as villains because that’s who we are. Friday is Carlsbad Village. Hanging at the beach, shopping, lunch at Daily News, and ice cream from Handles is a must. Dinner is tough because Park 101, Deni’s, and Coyote are there. Oh and Crackheads is a grand spot for happy hour. We will hit them all. . Saturday is Oceanside and dancing the night away. We will walk the pier (we’ve had enough sand this week) and eat at one of the fish and tacos spot down there. The night will be spent at Rooftop Bar listening to music and dancing the night away. Sunday is breakfast at Broken Yolk, because we have eaten so much junk we need Açaí bowls and I will talk my friend into moving here.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints! I do not talk about my faith and religion much because it is something for me, I am a part of it for me. People think it’s funny I am a part of the church because of who I am or what they think they know about the church. My church family has been my biggest cheerleaders in my personal and professional life. Not one member has questioned me about my love for African/Egyptian/Norse/Greek Gods. No one has made me feel like I should not be me during my journey in and out the church. They tell me I should not feel like I should separate who I am and just be me. I could not have gotten through my trials and tribulations and found the courage to go for my dreams without being a part of such an amazing family oriented faith.
