We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Greene and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, why did you pursue a creative career?
I choose to pursue an artistic and creative career for a lot of different reasons. The main reason is I enjoy seeing people be happy. My job as an entertainment lighting designer is to create environments that allow people to escape their current reality. This is the most fun part of the job which also brings up another reason I choose lighting. Shows and live events are a collaborative effort usually involving a large team of creative individuals. It can be a lot of fun to make art with others on a large canvas. This creates a strong sense of belonging while providing individuals the opportunity to showcase their art and talents. Being able to express myself through art is a critical part of my existence and happiness.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love to create lights that change and dance to live music on large concert stages. Smoke and beams of light are my preferred artistic medium. Over the course of my career I have had the pleasure of working with many established musical acts and performers. I have enjoyed designing and building lighting rigs for some of the biggest festivals in America. The key factor in making it from a hobby to a career is the ability to diversity your skill set and be willing to do anything to achieve your goals. On my journey to my career I needed to do a lot of ancillary tasks in order to find the right opportunities for my career. I needed to sweep the floor at the lighting shop before I got an opportunity to work on the lights. This led to learning how to program the lighting controllers and finally being trusted to design my own show. If I had never been willing to sweep the floor at the lighting shop then I never would be where I am today.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So much great stuff to do in SoCal. One of the main reasons I moved here is beach life. I love the coast and nature. You could explore a new beach every day for the rest of your life and still not see it all. I also go up to the Mojave desert at least twice a year. You can really get a sense of the vastness of our planet when visiting the desert. It also gives you a fresh perspective on city life.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Having creative outlets is very important to people. Because design is a creative outlet it can be a competitive field. I wouldn’t have a career in design without a number of people giving me a chance and showing me how to do the work. The first person to introduce me to art and design was my mom. She is a dance instructor, actor, playwriter, and artist. Growing up I was constantly surrounded by art, music and artists. These artists were the first ones to give me a chance to be creative and express myself through lighting design while actually being helpful to the show. So a big shoutout to all the parents and community groups out there providing art education and a space for collective creation.
