We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Drehobl and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, how do you think about risk?

When it comes to taking risks in my life I follow one simple criteria that I have found to work for me over the years.

Before moving forward with anything in my life, I ask myself this question: “Does doing this give me fulfillment?” I am a firm believer in the pursuit of fulfillment over anything else. In my experience, the pursuit of success is often at the cost of the pursuit of happiness and the same rings true when the roles are reversed. The pursuit of fulfillment on the other hand, not only evokes both feelings of happiness and feelings of success, but even more importantly allows you to do so from a place of authenticity.

When I was working 9-5 for big companies, I found that I was viewed as successful, but I never really felt happy. I eventually decided to go out and backpack the world, along the way I found that I was happy, but wasn’t finding success. After a lot of introspection, I decided to make a career out of my lifelong hobby of photography/videography. This is when I first experienced the magic of pursuing fulfillment and feeling as though I had a purpose in life. Although there were peaks and valleys in the process of making this career sustainable, I was motivated to make it work and find ways to mitigate risks along the way. Even when things would go wrong, I knew I was doing something with a purpose and would always find a way to persevere. I now find myself with a thriving photography and videography business that allows me to be social, try new things and see new places every day!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

My company is Drehobl Creative Media and we focus on combining cinematic techniques with the technique of modern day social media to create content that is palatable for a wide variety of audiences.

I am quite excited about a project I currently have in the works at the moment. We’re putting together a YouTube series where I have a conversation with people, ask them a few questions about the ways in which they have struggled with their mental health and the effect it has had on their lives. My goal is to give people a chance to share their story in hopes that each guest can feel heard and also so that their stories might have an impact on others who are going through similar things in their own lives!

This subject means a lot to me as I also have personal struggles with mental illness. As a videographer I have the means to make a project like this come to life; by sharing our stories, I believe we can create a community of people who support each other while also spreading awareness and reducing the stigma about mental illness!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

First let me say that I could even begin to cover all of the amazing things there is to do in San Diego and Siego County! I often have friends come visit San Diego and love showing them the beautiful place I was lucky enough to grow up in. If I had a week to show a friend around San Diego it would go as follows;

Monday – A day spent out exploring La Jolla Cove exploring the shops, hanging out at the beach and renting paddle boards or snorkel gear for some time out in the water. In the evening we would grab food at one of the many tasty restaurants in Little Italy. To close the night we would head to Shout House to see some dueling pianos!

Tuesday – We would start the day by hiking Cowels Mountain and enjoying a 360 view of San Diego followed by a trip to the Liberty Station Public Market for some food and a stroll down to the bay. That evening we would watch a rooftop movie in downtown.

Wednesday – We would spend the day going to all of the amazing Reef stores all over San Diego! San Diego has some of the best shops in the world for Coral Reef keeping and aquaculturists. We would would drive back and make it just in time to enjoy a sunset picnic at the Torrey Pines Gliderport! That evening we would head to Shore Club in Pacific Beach for the fish races, these are always a blast!

Thursday – We would head out early to go have a snow day up in Mt Laguna followed by heading to Julian to explore shops and enjoy some fresh apple pie! At night, we would take a drive out to Jacumba (DeAnza Springs Resort) for some stargazing. There are restrictions on light here and the stargazing is second to none!

Friday – Were spending the day out boating on the bay and soaking in the year round sunlight that SD has to offer. That evening we would head over to North Park and hop around a few of the unique bars in the area. We would cap the night off by heading over to the Wicked Warehouse for a fun night of DJs and dancing!

Saturday – In the morning we go out to the Carlsbad flower fields to enjoy the endless rows of colorful flowers. From here we would head out to the secret swing in Poway for some photos and to relax next to the running water! That night we would go out and enjoy on of the many fun nightclubs in downtown!

Sunday – We would start the day by grabbing brunch in Del Mar, eventually making our way out to Old town to watch some football and enjoy some Mexican food! From here we would head to the wonder spaces art exhibit on in the Marina and finally enjoy a Sunday sunset Hornblower cruise to close out the week!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout-out to my father Michael Drehobl for the enormous impact he had on my life. Growing up I was quite impulsive and could only ever see what was right in front of me at any moment. My father taught me to step back and think about each of my choices before making a decision and to always make the one that my authentic self knows to be true even if it may be unpopular in the eyes of others. He passed away in 2017 and I am forever grateful for his presence in my life.
