We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler B. Free and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, what do you want your legacy to be?
A legacy can have many different definitions. To me, a legacy is something that lives forever, though must also be left behind. I believe a considerable accomplishment one can have is to inspire a generation of people to go for greatness within themselves, so that they may share it with the world. I want my legacy to be someone that created my own path, and helped others along the way. Someone that inspired a generation of people to carry confidence with them every where they go, and to live life on the edge. When I say Life on the Edge, I don’t mean carelessly or recklessly, but rather living life with faith, and taking the risk that is believing in yourself. I want people to remember that Tyler B. Free created his own path and helped others along the way, and that I pushed the boundaries of what is “possible” or “impossible” in all i pursued.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I Believe what sets me apart from others is my ability to step outside the box, and go with crazy, eccentric designs that really pop out and catch your eye. Im proud that I have come as far as I did. When I first got to San Diego three years ago I knew nothing about sewing, nothing about making bags, or having my own fashion show or anything like that. All I had was a vision that only I could see and the passion to make it happen regardless of what obstacles lied ahead on my journey. I overcame those obstacles by stepping out on faith and just going for it. I believe that if you want something bad enough, if you search for something hard enough, you will eventually find the answers you need. If I can do it, ANYBODY literally can. I went from not knowing how to sew, let alone thread a needle, too 2 years later I have a brand OUTLAW, and I sew all the bags myself, I’ve won designer of the year 2 years in a row by Black SD Magazine, and the vision I had when I can to San Diego is finally manifesting itself. I think the Biggest lesson i learned is to be patient. It easy to get caught up in instant gratification in today’s society with social media and everything being so easily accessible. We want our art to get “liked” immediately. Reality is real things take time, that will last, build and leave a Legacy for generations to enjoy. Enjoy the process and the journey along the way. I want people to know that Being and OUTLAW is about being someone taking risks, living life on the edge, meaning living life on FAITH in themselves to achieve and execute whatever dream they feel called to. When you move with such confidence in yourself, and you continue to believe and overcome every obstacle, every doubt naysayers may throw at you, you become an OUTLAW.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
old town is always fun. and i would take them to wherever there is a local event to see the amazing talent that is out here.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Big shout out to my teacher who has taught me so much on my journey Mrs. Adriana. Also “keeping sewing alive” an organization here in San Diego that has helped me a lot as well.

Of course my entire family who inspired my Brand OUTLAW LOTE.
