We had the good fortune of connecting with Trey Vilcoq and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trey, what is the most important factor behind your success?
That’s an easy answer – it’s the team. We’re a small but committed team who are more like family than co-workers. Before starting BRIXY, we spent 15 years building a previous company, known for creating a hugely popular line of natural sunscreens that helped disrupt a product category in need of safe and effective alternatives. We have a successful track record of solving big problems and aim to do it all again by addressing the disposable plastic crisis. My business partner in BRIXY and I have been friends for 25 years and talk almost every day, whether that’s about business or catching up personally.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
BRIXY is our second chapter in the health and natural products space. Thinkbaby & Thinksport was our first, and after our company was acquired and in good hands, we turned our sights to BRIXY. We were united in our motivation to address the disposable plastic crisis and to make better, more sustainable products by asking the question: What if exceptional hair and skin care products didn’t have to come in a plastic bottle?

And to answer your question, no, it was not easy getting to where we are today. We’re taking all the countless hours and hard lessons learned along the way in building our first company and applying them to our next chapter, BRIXY. The goal is to work smarter and faster to successfully disrupt another product category by delivering sustainable alternatives and an exceptional experience.

I’d like the world to know about all the progress we’ve made in just our first year! We’ve developed compelling products, attracting hundreds of amazingly positive reviews. We’re honored to have our BRIXY shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bars available at many of the leading San Diego health and natural markets like Whole Foods, Sprouts, Jimbo’s, Lazy Acres, and OB Peoples Coop. In less than a year, BRIXY bars have replaced over 300,000 plastic bottles!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Let’s just all agree that San Diego is the all-time easiest city to entertain out-of-town guests. There are two things that are always at the top of my list since moving here 18 years ago: 1. the beaches and 2. Balboa Park. I believe Windansea Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches to enjoy. I love how it’s always shifting and changing. It can also be a fun experience taking out-of-town guests to Blacks Beach and watching their surprise as you enter the clothing-optional stretch! Balboa Park is such a gem. I love walking the grounds, ducking into a couple of the remarkable museums, and wrapping up the day with a craft beer and some live music at Panama 66.

I love showing my out-of-town friends around La Jolla as the natural beauty is just off the charts. I would start with a walking tour of my neighborhood, Bird Rock, including a morning outdoor yoga class at Riffs Studio, followed by coffee at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, and a pastry at Wayfarer (if the line is not too long!). I’d then take my friend to one of the many outstanding San Diego craft breweries, with my current favorite being the Harland tasting room in Bay Park. We’d then regroup for an early dinner at my go-to special occasion restaurant, Duke’s of La Jolla. Sure, Duke’s is rooted in Hawaiian culture, but it’s also very much La Jolla. The photography collection upstairs is an amazing opportunity to share some local surf history while looking out over La Jolla Cove. Ideally, we’d continue the evening at one of San Deigo’s iconic live music venues, like Casbah or Belly Up, depending on who’s playing. Whew, what an epic day!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, thank you for inviting me to share a little bit about my background and my path to creating BRIXY, an emerging company making 100% plastic-fee hair and skin care products. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my amazing Mom. Well, for obvious reasons, I wouldn’t be here today without her! More than that, she is a wonderful example of committing to a healthy and active lifestyle, continuing to grow mentally and emotionally, and becoming more and more of a true individual as she goes through life. Thanks, Mom!
