Meet Tony DiPasquale | Running Photographer and Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony DiPasquale and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I call myself a running photographer and filmmaker not only because I focus on the running space but also because I’m often running long distances with my gear to capture the moment. I’ve been known to carry my camera for 15-20 mile runs in the mountains. On the roads, driving or biking is easy enough to get around and capture your runner but for trail runs, races, and adventures, by foot is sometimes the only way. Being out in nature is part of what fuels me though. I love every moment of it.
It’s never easy. Building a business that can support your lifestyle and building a lifestyle that can be supported by your starting business is a fun balancing act. I reduced my living costs a ton in the beginning. It allowed me to focus more on my creativity and building skills. I was lucky to have many awesome communities around me that I had been investing in long before I picked up a camera. That meant I started with some credibility and a network that others might not be fortunate enough to have.
Building a business isn’t easy but it is actually the easier part. There are endless sources of information and “how to”s for building successful businesses. The hardest part for me was learning to be creative. After years of Tech and working for others, finding my own voice and being creative was a challenge. It’s a never-ending journey but I keep growing from just doing and allowing inspiration to take me when it arrives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Most of my friends are runners of some form so if you’re coming to town we’re definitely running up Mt Tam on Wednesday morning and getting coffee and pastries at Equator Coffees afterward. Then we’re running a Ninja Lite loop on Thursday morning with the Trail Thursday group. Then on Saturday we’ll join SFRC for their weekend, community long run in the Headlands, and go to Good Earth for lunch after. Sunday we’ll do an easy run in the Presidio or Golden Gate Park and hit up the farmer’s market for food after. If you’re not tired already, we’ll also go run through Sutro Heights, Twin Peaks, Glenn Canyon, Bernal Heights, and so many more amazing parks. To refuel our bodies, we’ll definitely pop by Bob’s Donuts, Mamahuhu, Devil’s Teeth, Judahlicious, Arsicault, and more. Finally, we’ll watch the sunset over the ocean with a beer or Best Day brew.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people, books, communities, etc helped and still support me along this journey. It’s hard to name just one. The very first were my parents, grandparents, and uncle who all influenced me growing up. After college, I found my community at the November Project workout group. There, I found supportive friends and the confidence to be me. The friends and communities that bloomed from that are the current muses that fuel my life.
