We had the good fortune of connecting with Timmie Brann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Timmie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I couldn’t find the gym for me so I decided to create my own. I’ve definitely always been a risk taker. Leap and the net will appear mentality for sure. So when I found myself in my 30s, wanting to still train like an athlete, I couldn’t find anything. The closest idea at the time was CrossFit but it didn’t interest me. So how in my 30s could I still train like a High School athlete? Then came the birth of Hybrid House.
What should our readers know about your business?
Hybrid House –
The Mission – The mission of Hybrid House is to create a community based connected environment where people can come to workout in a progressive way where people can truly see what they’re capable of. So what that means is, it’s a safe space, all are welcome, it feels like your Cheers of gyms. Everybody knows your name. The neighborhood bar if you will, the neighborhood gym. The gym is small, the classes are maxed at only 10 people creating a connected space where everyone knows your name. The Coach is able to learn you and know you allowing you to workout in a progressive way, rather than just checking a box. So those attracted to Hybrid House are those that either used to be athletic and want to access that part of themselves again. It is also appealing to those that never had that, who couldn’t climb the rope in gym class, who never wanted to run track and failed the mile, but now that they’re older, they want to be able to access what they missed in their childhood. So I started it myself 4 years ago because I couldn’t find what I was looking for. It’s about making those around you feel special to unlock your true potential. People feel safe in spaces that are small and connected.
To continue to create a space where people feel very comfortable. We don’t have mirrors. We don’t have towel service. We don’t have ego or douchieness, if that’s a word, if not it should be. A safe space for anybody and everybody where you can leave feeling like a true badass. Confidence building. Find what you’re capable of. See what you’re made of. Find your true potential with a cheerleader next to you. When you’re not so concerned with how you look you can really grind and grit because none of the other bullshit is there.
In connection you feel safe. It creates this environment that just feels good in a world that can feel so intimidating. Community and connection makes people feel safe. When you walk into a new space and someone greets you right away it’s already very calming. The environment feels like you’re in your buddy’s garage working out. We honor and do everything we can to keep the space safe and connected. The gym community is stereotypically intimidating and ego driven and so it is refreshing to be a part of a gym that tears down these sterotypes. It’s a space where you can go and get fit in a space that is so sacred and that feels really good. Gym class didn’t feel good, but this house feels really good. When you feel good, safe and supported you can unlock your true potential.
LEAVE FEELING LIKE A BADASS.
Philosophy – when you train for something and put something on the calendar it can give you focus, accountability, confidence and community. When you have a goal to aim for this is helpful. Accountability, routine, consistency, focus and accomplishment are confidence building and life changing.
WE TRAIN FOR STUFF.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well my friends always joke that I tell them to bring gym clothes and a water bottle and then make them summit a mountain when they visit, true story. We also live by amazing hikes, but I do enjoy balance in life so we would also – after summitting the mountain – go enjoy
Kihon Sushi – best sushi around.
Panxa – great happy hour.
Black – great ambiance for a night out on the town.
Bamboo Club – great drinks and food if your’re looking for a dark bar with rad folk.
Nicks
The Attic
Mannow
To name a few other spots.
I love balance in life so we would do all the things.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t have a gym to speak about without its members so I gotta dedicate this one to all the Hybrid House Homies out there! Holla!
