We had the good fortune of connecting with Thuy Pham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thuy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think most people can agree that the biggest risk in life is not taking any risks.

I’ve noticed that I tend to slack off when I’m comfortable.

For example last year, I moved back home briefly. As I was stepping into my small business while living off my parent’s couch, I didn’t really have the sense of urgency to push myself. I was afraid to work on clients and put myself out there because i had somewhat of a safety net. It took me 3 months to find the courage to start tattooing eyebrows on real people.

In comparison to present time, I left my parents’ home and now my safety net is myself. I don’t have a support system, I don’t have anyone around to cut me some slack when I need a break. If I’m being honest at one point I envied anybody with a stable 9-5 because when I get sick and need to reschedule clients, I don’t get paid that day, and like other small businesses we don’t get sick time or paid time off.

Some days are definitely better than others and not always consistent, but I’m just grateful to have a day. They really did not lie when they said the first year of business is the hardest.

Also the time and money spent to develop a new skill and perfect the craft in hopes it will pay off.

In hindsight, taking these kinds of risks was important because now I’ve put myself on the line. I really depend on myself.

I wouldn’t have done anything different even when it sounded crazy.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m a Licensed Permanent Make Up Artist. I also specialize in brow henna, brow lamination, and threading. I recently began my journey as a Brow Henna & Lamination Instructor which is really exciting.

Although I have a long way to go, I’m absolutely gratified that I’m still here and still going. It took a lot of persistence and discipline.

Like I said, some days are difficult and I’ve questioned if I chose the right path but one thing I’ve learned is to always keep my eye on the prize no matter what because you will constantly be tested and discouraged.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m especially grateful for all of my past and future clients because they are truly the reason I’m still here. For putting their trust and faith into me, and supporting this journey.

All of my friends that have supported me in ways that don’t even benefit them. For a listening ear when I need it most and believing in me when I don’t believe in myself. For promoting my business when I need the exposure or am having a bad week. It’s a selfless action being that some of them are also small business owners themselves.

My mentor. She definitely set me up for success since day one. I’ve learned a lot from her and am still learning. She always shows up when I need her. There’s no denying she’s opened a lot of doors for me and always shows up.
