We had the good fortune of connecting with Theresa M Halvorsen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Theresa, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I have a full time job and a long commute, in addition to my writing, editing, publishing and Youtubing (is that a word) life. I also have a family. Work life balance is pivotal. I work in blocks so when I’m focused on my day job or my family I can 100% focus on that.
But probably the biggest thing I’ve done is reflect when I’m relaxing or spending time with my family. I try to look around, appreciate what I have and remind myself this time is for “self-care” and aren’t I enjoying myself? I increases my enjoyment and when things get difficult, I have that moment to look back on.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have so much I’m proud about! I’ve learned so much since I started this journey. I think what sets me apart is my willingness to keep learning and keep pushing. I’ve never been one to sit on the couch and wonder “what if?” I’ve always just gone out and tried it.
In terms of challenges, time management and lack of time in general are my biggest ones. I keep learning, keep stretching and keep growing. I set boundaries where I can and acknowledge that what I’m trying to build (a publishing company, a successful author career and a helpful Youtube channel takes time.
I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is about the importance of building community. This profession is difficult. It’s hard to make money, it’s not not to make mistakes and many people end up giving up what they love. But building a supportive community of cheerleaders and those you can ask for help makes all the difference.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question–this part of the reason I wrote the “Lying” series which is set in San Diego and details various places around the city.
Wine tasting in Temecula in a must! Great wineries include Weins Family Cellar and Ponte Winery,
Depending on the time of year, San Diego’s Comic-Con is a must. Even if the person visiting isn’t into pop culture, it’s worth it to see the celebrities, the spectacle of the exhibit hall and off-site events, and of course, the cosplay.
And finally, going to Balboa park with all the museums and the world-famous San Diego zoo is not to be missed.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I always want to give a shout-out to my husband who is supportive, loving and helpful as I pursue this journey. He’s always willing to help out at an event or be a sounding board for ideas or struggles. I couldn’t do this without him.
I also want to give a shout-out to my fellow Semi-Sages of the Pages–my partners in our YouTube channel. Without their cheerleading, their support and their knowledge about writing, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
