We had the good fortune of connecting with Thee Oddz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Thee Oddz is a group that focuses on creating the highest quality live music possible at any venue. Starting out, we played at a myriad of venues from dive bars to weddings. Every live performance we viewed as an opportunity for honing our sound and promoting our brand. Eventually word got out about our hard work and we now enjoy a busy schedule of work as live performers!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Thee Oddz was formed by guitarist Nicholas Omary and drummer Kai Taylor, out of a desire and love for live performance. Bassist Nathan Robinson and Saxophonist William Brumbach soon joined to complete the band. The members of Thee Oddz are classically trained and studied jazz performance in conservatory with heavyweights like Kei Akagi, Darek Oleszkiewicz, and Lukas Ligeti.

The process of forming a band to booking steady performances is a hard one. Composing, rehearsing, and practicing setlists of music in itself are labor intensive tasks that demand hundreds of hours of work. Beyond this, getting in contact with illusive booking agents can make starting a live performance schedule difficult.

Through pure determination and love for the music we create, Thee Oddz have built their brand over the past two years, and now enjoy local acclaim at many of San Diego’s live music venues. This is just the beginning for Thee Oddz, as the band seeks to create recordings of original compositions and tour worldwide.

One lesson that has gotten us through difficult circumstances and has bonded us together is love for live music and performance. If you love what you do, the hard work will always feel rewarding!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We enjoy living in North County San Diego. For starters, go to the beach! Moonlight beach and Swami’s in Encinitas are as beautiful as they come. Being the live music lovers we are, we recommend checking out the premier music venues of San Diego including The Music Box, and The Belly Up. For a more intimate musical experience we recommend checking out The Jazzy Wishbone in Oceanside, Aztec Brewing Company in Vista, and Stone Brewing Escondido. You can catch Thee Oddz playing regularly at these local favorite haunts, often joined by talented friends and instrumentalists. After getting your live music fix stop by Mr. Bibi’s in Oceanside for the best Bibimap and Korean Fried Chicken in San Diego!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The members of Thee Oddz are supported and bolstered in many ways by their girlfriends Reyna Holt, Colette Culbertson, Kanani Vollmer and Mikki Nguyen. Colette is an actor local to San Diego. A dance and movement specialist, Colette teaches Hot Yoga and Pilates professionally. She loves bringing people together especially over quality music and food. Reyna is store lead and social media extraordinaire at Stone Brewing Escondido. A musician herself, she obtained her Bachelor’s in Percussion and teaches drumline. Mikki is a legal assistant and manages a team overseeing correspondence. She went to FIDM and majored in Fashion Design, and also illustrates in her free time. Kanani is cafe manager at Cute Cakes in Escondido, crafting culinary delights using the finest ingredients. Stop by for gourmet desserts that are to die for!
