We had the good fortune of connecting with Tessa McFionn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tessa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Wow. Well, I am a true believer in the idea that fortune favors the bold. Being willing enough to stand up in front of the world and say, “Hey, I wrote this. What do you think?” takes a lot of guts. Deciding to be an indie author is definitely a scary prospect. When I first began writing, I had never imagined that I would be doing it all on my own. Finding editors, cover designers, formatting the book itself. Each time I put out a book, it’s a risk. Is the timing right? Is it what people will want to read? Then there’s the marketing. It’s daunting and I am constantly needing to remind myself that journeys are always made up of one risky step after the next.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, as I said before, I’m a writer. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t telling stories, but finally decided to take the plunge in 2014 when I had my first book published. Personally, the simple act of standing in front of the world with your work in your hand and saying “I did this” requires a huge amount of courage. The road has not been easy (was with two small press publishers, one went belly up and the other was not a good fit so we parted ways) but nothing worthwhile comes without struggles.

Writing paranormal and science fiction romance. Sometimes trying to find a unique voice in such a saturated genre is tough, but those are the stories my heart wants to tell. I write steamy speculative romance where badass heroines and beguiling heroes, and I believe in magic.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ooh, that’s a tough one. I love San Diego, but if a friend was in town for a week, we would definitely be taking a trip to the Happiest Place on Earth. I am a Disney kid big time. But, if we were staying local, we’d go for some fun tiki drinks at False Idol, then grab a great bite at STP Grill. Hubby and I are hikers, so I’d probably hit a couple of the local trails, like the scenic ones in the Laguna Mountains or Torrey Pines.

I actually enjoy spending time at home hanging out in my backyard tiki hut.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A huge thank you goes out to the wonderful folks of Southern California Romance Writers. These great women and men have been such a fabulous well of support. They’ve provided workshops on craft and through them, I’ve made some amazing connections which continue to bring me joy and success.
