We had the good fortune of connecting with TEF XL and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi TEF XL, why did you pursue a creative career?
I realized music was my calling when I was twelve years old. Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, I faced many challenges and adversities, which I began to channel through writing lyrics as a form of therapy. My early experiences of dealing with street life, witnessing social injustices, and overcoming personal struggles deeply influenced my artistry.
Living through these intense situations gave me a raw and authentic perspective that I weave into my music. For example, tracks like “Injustice” highlight the harsh realities of urban policing and racial prejudice, inspired by real-life events. My upbringing in the 80s and 90s, combined with my appreciation for modern neo-soul and hip-hop, allowed me to create a unique sound that’s both nostalgic and conversational.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Thank you for the support and for having me! I’m excited to share more about my work and career with you.
My journey in music started at a young age. growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, I began writing my own lyrics at twelve, using music as a therapeutic outlet to navigate the challenges I faced. I’ve always strived to keep my music authentic and socially conscious. My songs often reflect the real-life experiences and societal issues I’ve encountered.
Beyond music, I’ve built a career as an entrepreneur and executive. The shift from street entrepreneur to earning a Doctorate degree and becoming a Fortune 500 business executive also shaped my music. Songs like “The Calling” reflect the determination and resilience I developed along the way, encapsulating the gritty details of my past and the faith that kept me moving forward. My early life not only provided the material for my lyrics but also instilled in me a passion for storytelling through music. It’s about sharing my journey, the lessons learned, and speaking truth, all while staying true to my roots and the communities that shaped me.
In 2020, I released singles like “Injustice” and “Trap Paradise,” which helped me build a solid fan base. My 2022 single “Deuces” gained international acclaim and further established my presence in the industry. More recently, tracks like “RNR,” “Say Less,” and “B.O.W.” have amassed nearly a half million streams, showcasing my ability to resonate with a broad audience while addressing pressing themes.
What sets my music apart is its conversational style—my aim is to connect with listeners on a personal level, sharing stories that are both relatable and thought-provoking. It has been said that my lyrical style fills the gaps left by greats like Jay Z and Rick Ross, it’s timeless, luxury rap. I think the work that best reflects this is the TEF Live at Studio West performance.
Looking forward, I’m continuously working on new projects and collaborations. My latest work includes the EP “Remember That” which precedes my upcoming album “Code Switch Vol. II: Life Lessons” which is the second edition of my audio-biographical journey that delves into the socioeconomic and relationship-based circumstances I’ve overcome. It’s a reflection of my life’s journey and a testament to my commitment to speak for the voiceless.
Thank you again for your support and for allowing me to share my story. I hope my music continues to inspire and connect with listeners, bringing awareness to the issues that matter most to me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is a fantastic place with so much to offer, from great food to amazing attractions. If you’re visiting, here are some spots you should check out:
Food and Dining
– Phil’s BBQ: If you’re a fan of BBQ, Phil’s BBQ is a must-visit. They serve some of the best ribs and BBQ chicken in town. It’s a local favorite, and the lines can get long, but it’s worth the wait.
– The Fish Market: Located right by the water, The Fish Market offers fresh seafood with a beautiful view of the bay. Their clam chowder and sushi are particularly popular.
– The Fish Shop (Encinitas): If you’re traveling up the 101 through Encinitas, I would say definitely stop by The Fish Shop. It’s a local favorite go to spot for me, they have great seafood tacos and fried shrimp and chips.
– Hodad’s (Oceanside): Real talk, I haven’t tried this spot yet, but I’m told it’s a must for a true San Diego burger experience. Their burgers are supposedly legendary and based on what I’ve heard the atmosphere is laid-back California. I’m planning to check it out since I’m creating a list of to-do’s for everyone!
– Las Cuatro Milpa: For authentic Mexican food, you can’t go wrong with Las Cuatro Milpas. It’s a hole-in-the-wall spot but a banga! Heads up it closes around 3pm!
Things to Do
– Balboa Park: A cultural oasis with beautiful gardens, museums, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo, it’s a great place to spend a day exploring.
– La Jolla Cove: If you love the ocean, La Jolla Cove is a perfect spot for snorkeling, swimming, or just enjoying the stunning coastal views. You might even spot some sea lions basking on the rocks.
– Gaslamp Quarter: For nightlife and dining, the Gaslamp Quarter is the place to be. It’s packed with restaurants, bars, and clubs, making it perfect for a night out on the town. I tend to lean towards the Prohibition Lounge (it’s a speakeasy shh …)!
Recommendations for Visitors
If I have friends visiting, here’s how I’d show them a great time in San Diego:
– Day 1: Start with breakfast at The Hash House A Go-Go, then head to Balboa Park for a morning of museum hopping. In the afternoon, visit the San Diego Zoo. For dinner, grab some BBQ at Phil’s BBQ.
– Day 2: Spend the morning exploring La Jolla Cove and maybe do some snorkeling. I also love walking the coast especially in the morning. Have lunch at The Fish Market. In the evening, head to the Gaslamp Quarter for dinner and drinks.
– Day 3: Take a relaxing day in Ocean Beach. Enjoy a burger at Hodad’s and walk around the funky shops and beachfront. End the day with a sunset at Sunset Cliffs.
San Diego is a city that offers a little bit of everything, so there’s always something new to explore and enjoy!
