We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanya Stoll and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanya, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Tanya: In terms of risk taking, I was taught by my parents to go with the path that will ensure a secure future. When I decided to quit my job with the government and move across the country to California to pursue fitness, I didn’t have their support. They thought I was crazy to move without having anything lined up in my career, and didn’t seem very confident in my decision. I knew I was taking a pretty big risk moving to a new state without having certainty in what I was to do to financially support myself. Within a week of moving to San Diego, I was hired to work at The Camp Chula Vista, and from there I was given opportunities to grow within the business to then franchise with my best friend and business partner, Shea, to now owning two locations. The risk I took allowed me to navigate through the different challenges I’ve faced over the years of owning and operating our two gyms, and brought one of the greatest pleasures I have in my life: to help and serve our community in health and fitness.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Camp Transformation Center is a group training facility that offers group training classes focused on improving strength and conditioning. We offer a variety of exercises led by certified trainers incorporating traditional free weight training as well a innovative movements to continue to challenge clients of all fitness levels. Our culture is what sets us apart from other boutique training facilities. In addition, we specialize in weight loss and fat loss providing nutrition guidance and accountability at no additional cost. Our culture sets us apart because we acknowledge every client that steps foot in our gym and we make our clients feel successful every step of the way in their individual journey. To get to where I am today, I learned that the best thing any business can do is to provide great customer service. We try very hard to make every member feel like family and that’s what works for us because it’s genuine and they can feel the culture of community. Very quickly we learned that accountability is what most people need. We pay attention to our member’s class attendance to ensure our clients are not paying for a service they are not using. Often we will call or text clients we haven’t seen if it’s been longer than a week or two since they last came to class. We want our clients to use their membership which is the opposite of how most big box gyms operate.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Other than taking them to my gyms to meet the most incredible people I know, I like going to Carlsbad for the beach scene. We’d first go there on a weekday to avoid the crowd, grab an acai bowl at one of the local cafes, and relax until sunset. Being LGBT, I enjoy going to Hillcrest for the bar scene. Gossip Grill and Uptown are my favorite bars in the area. For food, I have to take my friend to Siamo Napoli in North Park for the best Italian pizza in San Diego, then Gravity Heights in Mission Valley for their white pizza because they have my second favorite. For other cool things to do, maybe a beer tour, rent scooters (not on the same day of course), a rent jet skis to get outdoors.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My best friend, Shea, is the first person who comes to mind. Without her patience, forgiveness, encouragement and strong work ethic I couldn’t possibly do any of this without her. Also, success comes from the team that is along for the ride with you, so I have to mention our staff and clients who have supported the businesses over the years and have put their trust and confidence in our leadership. Lastly, my wife deserves recognition for allowing me to put my business first at times and has patience for long work days.
