We had the good fortune of connecting with Symone Carpenter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Symone, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The way I view risk now is a lot different than how I used to. Risk was something I tried my best to avoid because I associated it with all things negative. I like to think of risk as a challenge or an opportunity now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to go out and be reckless! I just believe that if you are passionate about something and you do the proper planning, risks won’t seem so scary. I am in the process of building my own business and it’s crazy to think how the old me wouldn’t have even started! I would have thought of all the possible things that could go wrong and stopped before giving the idea a chance. I made the decision to start my business almost a year ago and the journey has been amazing. I’ve learned so much in a small amount of time and everything feels right. I took another risk last year and started modeling even though “everyone was doing it” and “I’m not tall/skinny”. Deciding to model has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made; I’ve found something I’m extremely passionate about, I’ve made some amazing relationships, and I’ve cultivated a community for myself. Ultimately, be logical and smart, but don’t be afraid to take risks!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Because of my online presence, I feel like a lot of people think I model full-time. Although I wish that was the case, it isn’t. I currently have a career with the Department of the Navy as a Human Resources (HR) Specialist. I never wanted to be in HR, but after I graduated college in my hometown I wanted something different. I found this HR position online, applied for the San Diego, CA location and the rest was history! The work I do can be very challenging at times. My time management and organization skills have really been put to the test. There have been times I felt I couldn’t keep doing this kind of work, but I pushed through! I’ve been in my career for over two years now and I’m thriving. I pat myself on the back every once in a while for making it this far and doing my best every day.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestie is coming to visit, the first thing I’m thinking about is, “Where we finna eat at?” Haha. One thing about me: I LOVE TO EAT! Here are some of my favorite local restaurants: Breakfast Bitch (mimosas galore), The Holding Company (THC – beautiful rooftop and amazing drinks) , Surf & Soul Spot, Rhythms Chicken and Waffles, and pretty much any Mexican food spot! Aside from food, I love to be outdoors exploring. Hiking and swimming are a couple of my favorites and San Diego is great for that! A couple of my favorite beaches are La Jolla Shores and Mission Beach. A couple of my favorite hiking spots are Potato Chip Rock and Mission Trails Regional Park. Once upon a time, the clubs and bars in downtown San Diego were the move, but the Coronavirus definitely changed that. Coronavirus aside, the Gaslamp has it all and is amazing for nightlife. You can find amazing food from Cuban cuisine at Havana 1920 to amazing Italian cuisine options in Little Italy. You have an array of bars to choose from such as ALTITUDE Sky Lounge and clubs like Fluxx. The options are endless! I always take my friends to the Gaslamp whenever they visit me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I believe a great part of what makes me ME is the solid foundation I have from family and friends to online supporters. There has never been a time in my life when I felt alone because my family has always been there for me. My mom, (who’s sassy and funny like me), my brother (who can make anyone laugh and is the kindest person), and my dad (who’s the wisest person I know and always knows what to say). Can’t forget my handsome, furry little brother Taco! They are everything to me! I’d also like to shoutout my boyfriend and my friends. My boyfriend has introduced me to the music world (which is my next risk to take *wink *wink) and I love it! I mean, who would’ve ever thought I would be making music? Not me! I feel like I can do anything because of the amazing people I surround myself with. My friends are the best friends a girl could ask for! We are so supportive of each other and each other’s dreams. They motivate me on a daily basis to be the best version of myself. I love all of you!
