We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Aquila and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I am a musician. I am a violinist, electric violinist and vocalist. I spent many years training and honing my craft. I have worked as a sideman/soloist for a lot of artists in the recording studio and on stage..I have enjoyed every minute of it! While I love the process of working with other people and bonding over music, there was an inner longing. This yearning was to create a musical vehicle in which I could express myself completely. A musical project that was my voice. That’s why I began my own business of being an Independent solo artist.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I am most proud of is my stage performances. Performing live is my greatest joy and passion. I am known for high energy, high octane shows. This type of show requires lots of preparation both musically and physically. I work hard and am proud of that. The greatest gift is to have an audience respond favorably to what you do. The biggest lesson is in perseverance. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve been knocked or embarrassed by failure. You do learn from failure but only if you get up again. You can reinvent yourself and start over every single day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am from New York City so it’s all about the Arts! I would definite take my guest to The Blue Note and Birdland for some Jazz. We would also have to walk around Greenwich Village and check out the architecture throughout Manhattan. We would definitely have to catch a Broadway show and then something cool at Radio City Music Hall or Lincoln Center. You can find great food everywhere in NYC.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had so many helpers and cheerleaders along the way! Mark Wood and Joe Deninzon for introducing me to the world of electric violin and for showing me that violin can Rock! Dr. JC Izquierdo for helping me through serous physical injuries and getting me back on stage with a great sense of humor.
