We had the good fortune of connecting with Storm Wahal, Bri Maloney, Eliana Calderon, and Garvin Singh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Storm, Bri, Eliana, and Garvin of Girl Tape, what principle do you value most?
Girl Tape is named after hormones, so…Take your hormones! That’s not just a literal daily task reminder, that’s a call to be yourself, to build yourself into who you want and need to be. We know how significant it is to embrace every part of yourself and be authentic to who you are. Our music revolves around that, our relationships with each other do too, and that’s truly what we wish for everyone to experience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Girl Tape is a passion project we can’t stop doing. We met in college, but right now, no one’s planning to go back to school and some of us are taking a break from everything except music. We write niche music and every song kinda goes somewhere different, but that’s how we like it. We want to be experimenting. We want to dip our toes into as many genres as we can and explore them in unconventional ways, especially through use of uncommon combinations of instruments. We have some sound that is more metal, some more R&B, some synthpop. We’re very inspired by all kinds of music. Refusing to commit to one thing is potentially risky, but exploring it all is an important goal for us.

We’re working toward having a lifetime of great music, and great times with great people. And since we’re an experimental band, we like to take our ideas and mess them up, seeing how weird we can make them until we stumble upon something great that we couldn’t have otherwise. We’d love to be an inspiration for other musicians who aren’t afraid to be themselves and sound how they want to. Other musicians who are taking their hormones, so to speak.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love hanging out in North Park and Hillcrest! There’s a lot of fantastic food and bars in the area, and the community there feels like home to us. There’s a farmers’ market on Sundays that’s always a great time. We would definitely catch a show at The Observatory or Queen Bee’s, and maybe check out some of the thrift stores in the area. We’d also definitely take a trip out to the beach in La Jolla, then swing by The Che Cafe for an awesome small show. Lastly, no visit to San Diego would be complete without swinging down to Tacos El Gordo.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We have to shoutout Musicians’ Club at UC San Diego! It’s a really great community of musicians who all work together to create a lovely local music scene, and it’s where we all met each other! We’ve met so many amazing bands and musicians there and the vibe of the group is incredibly collaborative, everyone is always sharing bills and going to each other’s shows and it feels like a group full of love and support. We would not be a band without Musicians’ Club.
