Meet Steve Brio | Commercial Actor/ Print Model and retired Fire Captain/Paramedic

We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Brio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steve, what do you attribute your success to?
I have felt most successful in my acting career when I feel I am able to relate to and authentically portray a character. I believe the more you can bring your true self to a character, the better the character is portrayed. Ideally, when I am creating a character, I start off by asking myself if I have really experienced what the character is experiencing. If I have, then I allow myself to replay those feelings: where I was in life, what was happening and how I really felt emotionally in that moment. If I haven’t had the same experiences then I think of anyone I know that may have and then re-create what I have seen in them. My years of being a Paramedic opened me up to a world of how people act daily both through medical conditions and stressful times that involved us helping them in their time of need. I reflect on those interactions as well.
I book the most work on jobs that I can just be myself and NOT ACT! But just present myself as a way I (Steve) would react, even though my character’s name most likely wouldn’t be Steve, I am giving my real self and it feels and looks the most real when filmed.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe firmly that God gives each of us individual talents. I have always been a creative person. I acted in elementary school and junior high but not professionally. For many years, my career path was down a separate route. Growing up in Orange County in a single parent home, my mother had severe medical issues. We accessed 911 frequently for my mother’s health issues. The way the firefighters and paramedics treated my mother and acknowledged my brother and I as kids led me into a career in the Fire Service. Although this was an signficantly rewarding and fulfilling career, I never lost my love
for performing/creating so later in my firefighting career I began to parallel into acting. I retired as a Fire Captain/Paramedic with 27 years of experience. I reflect frequently on my time as a firefighter in creating characters today.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It depends on what time of the year people would come to visit, but if it were the Summer, I would definitely try to bring them to the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. It’s an
unbelievable experience seeing famous works of art be re- created with living people. If it were the Winter, I would
encourage them to go to Disneyland, or Universal Studios for the holiday lights and decorations. There is a great neighborhood in Orange County that does a fantastic job with drive-through holiday light displays as well. However, anytime of the year is always safe to take people to San Diego, enjoy Old Town, or the Gaslamp district and also my favorite restaurant on the water, “The Fish Market.” If I could squeeze in Los Angeles, it is always great to go to Griffith Park Observatory. There are incredible views of the L.A. Basin and then go to my favorite Italian restaurant, Palermo’s in Los Feliz. I have been going there for over 40 years and it is great. I started going with my dad when I was just a kid. Tony (the owner) was one of my dad’s former high school students and he is such an inspiration to the community through his involvements.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My acting career started with an annual theatrical performance called “Pageant Of The Masters” I met a family that encouraged me to pursue commercial acting. This was 20 years ago and I have now been a professional actor/model for 16 years. To this day, I still perform annually in the Pageant Of The Masters every summer. From there I got great guidance from fellow actor Alice Bowden in starting off my career. I studied at the Performer’s Academy in Laguna Hills where I had great instructors in Brent Huff and Jeff Celentano. They are both ”Actor’s Directors” as they started as actors themselves. Brent plays Smitty on the television series “The Rookie” and is also an amazing Director. Jeff just released his new film “The Hill” and is terrific.
