Meet Stella Chung | Host, Producer, Esports Commentator, Games Journalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Stella Chung and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stella, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My life has kind of always been about taking risks. I was severely burnt out from college and I took a break and started streaming casually. That night that I streamed for the first time in 2014, I remember chatting with one or two people who found my stream and wanted to talk about the game I was playing, Telltale’s The Walking dead, and I was so enamored by this aspect of content creation, I literally went out the next day to Best Buy to grab a Snowball mic and started streaming nonstop.
I ended up not going back to college and being a full-time streamer for a few years while taking on and off part time jobs. Then I decided to take the risk and move to California. I was fortunate enough to take this risk because I had my boyfriend at the time already living in California but I definitely struggled to make my own ends meet and I had to put my goals on hold. I originally moved to California to pursue more games industry opportunities but got sidetracked with keeping up with expenses there.
Then, in 2018, I got fed up with waiting for a break and decided to quit my job and become a full-time streamer again. I pursued my goal of working in the games industry even harder and I ended up getting my job at IGN and the rest is history. So… yeah lots of risk taking.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I got my job at IGN I was a little nervous that my skills wouldn’t be up to snuff. Honestly, my goal wasn’t even to work at a major outlet, I originally wanted to work as a host in the gaming space and esports space. So I got hired as a contractor at IGN to capture gameplay and provide support with video edits. I was definitely a bit nervous because everything I knew about editing, photoshop, and voice over was all self-taught.
But when I started working and got some training and help, I realized that self-taught skills are STILL valuable skills that should NOT be overlooked. You have to value what you know and be confident about it and that’s the biggest piece of advice I continue to give people.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this to my long-time Twitch stream followers. Ever since day 1 I’ve had nothing but love and support and belief that I could get to where I am this day. They have given me nothing but unfaltering support and love that I’m still trying to pay back to this day. The Stellar Rangers community has honestly been such a welcoming and loving group and it continues to grow and I really owe everything to them.
