We had the good fortune of connecting with Star Bourgoyne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Star, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my career taught me is not to allow other people’s perceptions of me or opinions on what they think I should be doing with my life to throw me off my path and disrupt me from fulfilling my purpose. There are many more naysayers than supporters in this world, but you are the only person who can dictate what you are capable of, so if you have a dream and you know you can make it a reality, bet on yourself and go for it!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist, I use bold colors and unique angles to make my work stand out. I also like emphasizing certain textures and details to elevate my art further. I want to tell a story through my lens, so I focus on highlighting facial expressions and body language to convey my message when I photograph people. When shooting events like sports games, I go beyond what’s happening on the court or the field to capture the event’s energy. I photograph the crowd, sports staff and overlooked parts of the event like time outs or breaks. I look at the whole picture and use the principles of photography to fit within my own vision and style, even if that means applying those principles in an unorthodox way. I love to create, and my art truly captures the essence of who I am as an artist and individual
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friend to Petersen Auto Museum, Nicks Restaurant, and sunset cliffs. I love these places because of the incredible views, the energetic atmosphere, and the beautiful art that lies within these places. They are perfect places to take friends and family as they spark conversation and allow you to bond with your loved ones over food, nature, and art.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my friends for supporting my art and collaborating with me on my first few legitimate projects. Many of my friends have modeled for me, taught me techniques, and shared and appreciated my art. If it weren’t for them, I definitely would not be where I am today, and I am grateful for their support, love, and appreciation as I love and appreciate them even more!
