We had the good fortune of connecting with Spencer Kirksey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Spencer, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was a PE teacher and Athletic Director for an about a decade but when Covid made its first appearance I was in the first wave of cuts.

I’m true transparency I was done dealing with the politics of being in a school setting and after having a heart to heart with my wife, I decided to enter the great unknown of freelance photography and social media marketing. It was something I did on a very surface level but loved creating content for brands and figured if I fully committed I’d be able to do something noteworthy.

Fast forward almost 4 years and I am now a full-time freelance hired hand for social media management, photography and videography for brands and agencies that are in the outdoor space primarily and I’ve never looked back ever since.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am all about lifestyle content. My usual workflow is getting a group individuals together for a shoot, giving some direction but ultimately letting them just do whatever it is they would normally be doing and I’ll be on the outskirts capturing them in moment.

I do whatever I can to avoid overly curated shots and obnoxious poses and just let my subjects be themselves. I find that to be a lot more authentic and relatable for a brand’s fan base.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Love me a good mountain town!

Hit the slopes, get a hike in, camp out in the cool elements, campfires, beers and good food with good company can’t be beat in my opinion.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a now buddy who gave me my first major role in an agency helping run a brands social channels. This was my first big break and was a huge step in the growth of my career. He still to this day collaborate on projects here and there and I consider a good friend.
