We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonny Nevarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonny, what matters most to you?
Authenticity and enthusiasm above all else. The old adage “there is only 1 of you” has so much wisdom and value in it once you see it as a truth. Embracing who you are is a lifelong process, but once you do, lean into it and be the best version of whoever that person is. Your friends and clients will see that authenticity and appreciate it because it is so uniquely “you!” It has taken me many years to find my professional voice and personal style. In the beginning, I emulated those around me who had found some success. With time, the voices I had emulated faded into the background and my voice emerged. What it has become is an amalgamation of many things. Some of these components come naturally, and some have taken me time to hone and incorporate into my professional persona. Above all else, I am a listener. I operate from that place first. I always tell myself that I am here to serve. And service comes from observing the needs of others. As I listen, I can empathize, advocate, and problem solve. So along with listening comes problem solving in the form of “how do I help my client accomplish their objective?” The next step in problem solving is drawing upon my 20+ years of experience, as well as my creativity. Between experience and creativity, there is almost no problem that can’t be solved. And what truly defines my brand is operating from a place of genuine enthusiasm because mindset is everything. I am the energy guy. That is one thing that is impossible to fake. I am passionate by nature and I lean into that whenever I can.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
It has taken me over 2 decades to establish myself as the professional I am. From the very beginning, I have made every effort to elevate my profession by conducting my business in a way that would serve and even surprise my clients. The objective with every relationship is to get my clients think “why doesn’t every realtor do it this way?” I chose quality over quantity a long time ago because scaling the relationship business is nearly impossible. But I have built a clientele over time that puts their faith in me, and refers me to their friends and family. Every past client is family, and every new client is a vote of confidence that my way of doing business is the right way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It would have to start with a walk on the beach, because you can’t do San Diego without putting your feet in the sand, smelling the salt air, and feeling the mist of ocean water on your face. From there, I would stop at Lourdes for the best breakfast burrito in north county accompanied by a cup of coffee at Bird Rock or Steady State for some of the best coffee anywhere. I’m a person that lives to eat, so I would insist that anyone coming to San Diego made a pilgrimmage to Convoy in Kearny Mesa to take in one of the most incredible Asian food scenes anywhere in the US. For a truly memorable experience, I’d book a charter fishing trip with Brothers Sport Fishing for a day of chasing mahi, yellowtail, and maybe even tuna. Our fishing is world class, and no trip to San Diego is complete without experiencing that. For even more coastal fun, a day of snorkeling or diving in La Jolla reminds us of the beauty and diversity of life just off our shores. In the evening, I’d recommend taking in a show at the Casbah for a truly authentic punk experience, or possible the Observatory in North Park, or a mellow set at the BellyUp in Solana Beach. For a truly special glass of wine, a trip to Vino Carta in Little Italy is a must. They only serve a curated selection of natural and biodynamic wine, which is my favorite!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am inspired by my San Diego community. We are a town filed with people who embrace the blue-collar ethic of rolling up your sleeves and getting it done. We are dreamers, we are makers, and we are kind to each other. My San Diego community has inspired me to be the best version of myself. I have drawn tremendous wisdom from the modern interpretations of Stoicism by Ryan Holiday. The Daily Stoic is required reading for me, as is “The Obstacle Is The Way.” The wisdom of Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus demonstrates that we as humans have been working through the same problems since the beginning of time. My daily outlook is grounded in this philosophy. I also have to credit my parents for modeling an honorable life as well as supporting me unconditionally. I have been blessed to have a spouse who has been my rock through the toughest of times. Finally, I must credit my children who inspire me to live a life that they can be proud of.
