We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonia and Kamal Warda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonia and Kamal, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is essential in starting your own business. In the restaurant world, succeeding is never guaranteed, you just have to take that chance. If you never take that chance, then you will never know if you can succeed! We risked a lot with Sabor Mexican Grill but at the end it was worth it, our restaurant has been a Lemon Grove gem for 17 years and we have also established a very successful catering business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets Sabor apart from the rest is the fresh ingredients, the handmade tortillas and the charcoal grilled meats that we use. We are not just a taco shop; Sabor delivers homemade food like Sopes and Pozole but also caters to those who love street food like mini TJ tacos and California burritos! Sabor takes pride in being able to offer a variety of items on both our restaurant menu and our catering menus! Customers can choose from our traditional taco catering to burgers and hotdogs to even Italian food! Carlos is a very experienced chef that learned to cook in Italy and was previously a butcher so he is very versatile!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To start, I would definitely take them to Sabor! I would order them mini tacos; the flavorful Al Pastor, the juicy Carne Asada and some crispy Tripas! After that I would take them to Chicano Park to view the beautiful murals and show them the history, then finish off with some homemade ice cream at Tocumbo Ice Cream. On a Wednesday, I would take them to Ocean Beach Farmer’s Market and Sunset Cliffs for sunset, and finish the night off with a trip to OB Noodle house and definitely have their PB Jameson shots and Garlic Wings! Other notable places are: Coin Op in North Park for drinks and arcade games, Tropifruit in El Cajon for the best tortas and acai bowls, An’s Dry Cleaning on Adams for amazing ice cream, El Paisa in Barrio Logan for delicious Aguas Frescas and tacos, Mission Beach Boardwalk for amusement park rides, Birch Aquarium in La Jolla to see unique fishes and Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach for a beautiful skyline views; just to name a few eateries and fun places in San Diego.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We are forever grateful for our family who has supported us through everything and alongside with that our team, who has become like family. Our team is always dedicated and dependable throughout all the ups and downs that come along our way. We would also love to give a shoutout to our favorite small businesses that help Sabor maintain its authentic flavors. For the freshest flour tortillas and corn masa, we love to stop by Gabriel’s Tortilleria in Barrio Logan. The staff is incredibly friendly and very dependable and consistent on delivering the best ingredients. Moreover, there is Baja Produce that also deserves a shoutout for their garden-fresh produce and fruits. Lastly, we would love to thank the instagram page @improvinglemongrove for always supporting us and getting the word out their for us!
