We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylar Binney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skylar, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
People often say “work smarter, not harder.” This is great advice in general, though when it comes to my crafting, I don’t find it to be as applicable. The smarter way to craft would be to find one technique I can do quickly, cheaply, and at mass so that I can profit. Though, the time and challenges in creating something out of nothing is what I love most about crafting. This is why I’ve kept my crafting mostly as a hobby, because I’m not looking to become more efficient. I thrive in learning new techniques just enough to be able to pull them off, then move on to learn the next skill. I hardly make the same thing twice. That’s the fun of it!

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I have an incredible passion for creating, whether tangibly, digitally, or experientially. This comes across in everything I do: my day job, crafting side hustle, and the time I spend with friends and family. I was lucky enough to decide back in high school that I wanted to do marketing and create, so I’ve shaped everything in my life around practicing those skills. That meant being the Editor in Chief for my high school magazine, planning events for my college, marketing myself through my DIY blog and Instagram, creating banners for my sorority – anywhere I could find a way to exercise my creativity. Since graduating, I went on to become a marketer (no surprise), and I find so much fulfillment in being able to channel my creativity in my personal and professional life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a San Diego native, I can confirm there is never a shortage of things to do here! If I had to choose, my favorite spot would be La Jolla Shores. Even having lived here my whole life, La Jolla still seems to feel like a vacation and is the quintessential Southern California experience – palm trees, beaches, cafes, seals, views, cliffs, hikes. It has it all!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I come from a family of do-it-yourselfers! My family is naturally creative, and it comes to life in many ways: art, building, cooking, crafting, sewing. When I grew up seeing my family creating one of a kind art, it inspired me to do the same. The best part of having a creative family is being able to work with them and learn their individual crafts, expanding my range of skills. If I need to figure out how to make something, someone in my family knows how to do it!
