Meet Sisters Of St. James Productions | Drag Production Company

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sisters Of St. James Productions and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sisters Of St. James Productions, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We were called to start our production company during the midst of the Covid Pandemic, back in 2020. Our Co Founders Amber St. James, LUXE The Drag Queen and Brennda Joy with their many years of experience as drag show producers were in the midst of producing a few digital drag shows and content for San Diego State University and decided to use their skills to create digital shows for folks outside of the university. It was through this desire to create space for community connection during a time where the queer community felt disconnected and isolated that pushed them to create Sisters Of St. James Productions and started producing online drag shows for the community to tune into, since they could no longer enjoy this community building pass time in person anymore. Their first season of shows was truly jam packed producing shows and content that not only catered to local San Diego residents but that also connected and highlighted drag artists across the United states and internationally. All the while building in moments of intentionality, joy, and high production and entertainment.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We began our business in the summer of 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic as a way of continuing our work as space creators and community builders. We recognized the ways in which drag had always been a space for folks to connect and build lastin bonds and wanted to find a way to continue to provide that space. So as the culture degan to shift in the midst of the pandemic and drag artists had to find new ways to invite folks to engage with their art we had to find a new way to highlight this and turned to digital streaming which then moved into fully prerecorded 1hr 30 minute – 2 hour shows (Or mini movies) that we sent tireless hours putting together, with content provided by local, national, and global drag artists. We were one of very few local drag artists in our community who were constantly putting out high production content. As we begin to wrap on our third season of shows and plan for our fourth season of shows we have been able to not only continue to produce shows and provide so many new drag artists their first opportunity to show their stuff but have also introduce programs that allow us to also upskill drag artists and create a pathway where they can not only hone their performance skills but learning job skills to allow them to one day produce their very own shows. All while also supporting our own philanthropy work through intentional partnerships and fundraisers to help support and reinvest in our own local queer community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting for a week I would encourage them to explore Hillcrest also known as the Gayboorhood of San Diego. We could start off with a Fabulous Drag Brunch over at Urban Mo’s, then move on to a cute little snack bite at Board and Barrel, after that we can go explore some of the art throughout Hillcrest and then end the night with a fabulous dinner at inside out and then dance the night away at Rich’s San Diego.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to shout out all the amazing people who have supported us and our many endeavors and projects and shows. We would not even remotely have the success we have been able to acquire if it had not been for the many amazing folks that supported us along the way. Be it purchasing tickets to our events, Sharing our shows and events, attending, or even just following us on our journeys. We thank each and every one of you all.
