We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherin Kloer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been on the creative side and have loved interior decorating since I was a kid. I’m guessing that came from my mother who was always painting, wall papering and re-arranging furniture. My mother gave us a lot of expressive freedom when it came to our own spaces, so I found myself doing the same in my bedroom when I was young. After I graduated college with a degree in Public Relations, I worked in the Marketing field until my first daughter was born. I didn’t want to miss out on a minute with them and I was fortunate enough, to stay at home with them while my husband worked. Flash forward to now I have an 18-year-old, and a 20-year-old. After 19 years of staying home and decorating my homes, my families’ homes, and friend’s homes I decided to start my own on-line home decor and interior decorating business.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is called Salt & Vine Interiors (www.saltandvineinteriors.com) and it is primarily an on-line home decor and accessories business. However, after purchasing items from me, many of my customers will ask me to come and decorate, re-decorate or re-design a space as well. I started my business in January of 2021 so I am very new to the industry but not new to home decor and decorating. I’ve always been told I have an eye for decorating and have been working on my own homes as well as family and friends homes for decades. Its always been a dream to actually do it for a living so with my girls all grown up this is my time!
When I started I had no idea how to set-up or design a website but I just dug right in. I knew I would use Shopify for my e commerce and website because I had heard it was fairly simple to use. The learning curve was steep but I persevered and launched my website in April of 2021. Learning how to apply for wholesale accounts was also something new to me but again I just told myself to move forward each day in some way. I made a list of to dos and just took it one day at a time until I was ready to go live. My husband was very encouraging and my biggest cheerleader.
My goal is always to choose quality home decor that feels natural and inviting and that will go well in most spaces. I never choose an item unless I would put it in my own home. My inventory is composed of a variety pieces that are either handmade, imported or made in the U.S.A. Some of them are fair trade items such as our Artisan Baskets that are made by women in Guatemala who support themselves by creating one-of-a-kind beautiful baskets. We also have handmade pottery made right here in the United States. Our imported pieces provide a wonderful variety as well.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A perfect day would start out with a walk down to downtown Encinitas for coffee and breakfast. There are many great eateries and coffee places in Encinitas. One of our favorites is Encinitas Cafe, it’s a classic. While you’re down there enjoy shopping at one of the many boutiques or surf shops. Our favorite beach to spend the day at is Swami’s, it’s a famous surf spot as well. Later we might jump on electric bikes and head into Solana Beach for pizza and a beer at Pizza Port. The next day I would take them to breakfast at Nectarine Grove in Del Mar and then head out for a hike at Torrey Pines. Sea World and the San Diego Zoo are always favorites for out-of-town guests as well.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband deserves my shout out because he is always my biggest cheerleader and was the one who encouraged me to get started.
