Hi Shamine, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Sharia’s Closet has a significant positive impact on the San Diego community by providing free clothing and essential items to individuals and families in need. Here’s how the organization helps: Meeting Basic Needs: Sharia’s Closet provides gently-used clothing to people experiencing financial hardship or crisis, no questions asked. This service helps meet a fundamental human need for adequate clothing, which is crucial for dignity, comfort, and social participation.
Supporting Vulnerable Populations: The organization works with over 230 social service organizations, including domestic violence shelters, to provide clothing to those in crisis. They also collaborate with military and police departments to reach individuals in need. Promoting Dignity and Self-Esteem: Sharia’s Closet aims to create a welcoming, home-like environment where people can choose clothing that makes them feel good about themselves. This approach helps restore dignity and self-worth to those facing difficult circumstances.
Facilitating Economic Opportunity: By providing professional attire for interviews and work, Sharia’s Closet helps individuals prepare for job opportunities and improve their economic situation. This support can be crucial for those trying to get back on their feet. Community Engagement: The organization relies on volunteers and donations from the community, fostering a spirit of giving and social responsibility. This engagement helps build a stronger, more compassionate community. Addressing Clothing Insecurity: In 2023 alone, Sharia’s Closet fulfilled 14,000 plus requests for clothing, demonstrating the significant need for this service in the community. By addressing clothing insecurity, the organization helps alleviate one aspect of poverty. Environmental Impact: By facilitating the reuse of gently-worn clothing, Sharia’s Closet contributes to reducing textile waste and promoting sustainable consumption practices. Through these various initiatives, Sharia’s Closet makes a meaningful difference in the lives of San Diego residents, promoting social equity, dignity, and community support for those in need.

Shamine Linton is the founder and CEO of Sharia’s Closet, a non-profit organization that provides free customized care packages of clothing to individuals in need. Her journey to establishing this impactful organization is one of passion, resilience, and dedication to serving her community. Shamine’s Vision and Mission Shamine believes in making the world a better place “one action at a time, one day at a time, and one bag at a time”. This philosophy drives the vision and strategy of Sharia’s Closet, which offers creative solutions to help those facing various challenges, including victims of natural disasters, human trafficking, domestic violence, refugees, and individuals who are unemployed, injured, disabled, or homeless. Unique Approach: What sets Sharia’s Closet apart is its commitment to providing a “boutique-style” environment, treating every client with dignity and respect. This approach ensures that individuals receiving assistance feel valued and supported during their time of need. The organization’s focus on inclusivity means they serve all members of the community without discrimination. Growth and Impact: Under Shamine’s leadership, Sharia’s Closet has experienced significant growth: Served over 15,000 people Collaborates with 60+ social service organizations in San Diego Works with military and police departments Maintains an office at the Family Justice Center in Downtown San Diego to serve domestic violence victims Overcoming Challenges: Shamine’s journey was not without challenges. However, she found support in mentors like John, who believed in her vision and helped make her dream a reality. He provided not only financial assistance but also guidance on marketing, accounting procedures, and other business operations. This mentorship was crucial in helping Shamine build the skills necessary to serve people at the highest level. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To create an unforgettable week-long itinerary for my best friend’s visit to San Diego, here’s a blend of iconic attractions, delicious dining, and vibrant experiences that showcase the best of the area.
Day 1: Arrival and Balboa Park
Morning: Start with breakfast at The Cottage in La Jolla, known for its fresh, local ingredients.
Afternoon: Head to Balboa Park, where you can explore the beautiful gardens, visit the San Diego Zoo, and check out various museums like the San Diego Museum of Art.
Evening: Dine at Juniper and Ivy, a trendy spot offering innovative American cuisine.

Day 2: La Jolla and Coastal Views
Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at The Cottage in La Jolla, then stroll along La Jolla Cove to watch sea lions and take in stunning ocean views.
Afternoon: Visit Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve for hiking and breathtaking coastal scenery.
Evening: Experience a sunset at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park followed by dinner at The Smoking Goat, known for its farm-to-table offerings.

Day 3: Maritime Adventures
Morning: Breakfast at Great Maple for their famous maple bacon doughnuts.
Afternoon: Explore the USS Midway Museum and learn about naval history. Afterward, take a San Diego Harbor Cruise for a different perspective of the city.
Evening: Enjoy a casual dinner at Seaport Village, where you can find various eateries and shops.

Day 4: Outdoor Activities and Culture
Morning: Grab a quick breakfast at Café 21 before heading to Cabrillo National Monument for stunning views and a bit of history.
Afternoon: Spend the afternoon at SeaWorld, enjoying the marine life and thrilling rides.
Evening: Attend a game at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, or enjoy a San Diego Dinner Cruise for a unique dining experience on the water.

Day 5: Adventure and Relaxation
Morning: Breakfast at Breakfast Republic, famous for its creative breakfast dishes.
Afternoon: Visit Torrey Pines Gliderport for paragliding or simply to watch the gliders while enjoying the ocean view.
Evening: Explore the nightlife in Little Italy, perhaps joining the Taste of Little Italy food tour for a culinary adventure.

Day 6: Whale Watching and Beach Time
Morning: Have brunch at Kettner Exchange in Little Italy.
Afternoon: Go on a San Diego Whale Watching Cruise to see these magnificent creatures during migration seasons.
Evening: Relax at Coronado Beach, followed by dinner at Peohe’s, which offers a beautiful view of the San Diego skyline.

Day 7: Departure Day
Morning: Enjoy a final breakfast at The Mission for a taste of local flavors.
Afternoon: If time permits, take a leisurely walk across the Coronado Bridge for stunning views of the city.
Evening: Wrap up with a visit to Seaport Village for last-minute shopping and a farewell dinner before your friend departs.

This itinerary combines natural beauty, cultural experiences, and culinary delights, ensuring my friend has an exciting and memorable visit to San Diego.
