We had the good fortune of connecting with Severina Thom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Severina, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Of course, there are tons of risks when starting your own business. But in all honesty…I think it’s more “risky” to NOT chase your dreams. What’s the worst that could happen?! Either you succeed at something new or you “fail” and go back to what you were doing before you took that leap of faith.

Let’s say you leave your stable 9-5 job and decide to go all in on chasing your dreams. If things don’t work out (after truly giving 110% of your effort to create a successful business) the worst thing that can happen is that you find a different cubicle to work in from 9-5 again.

While some people might think it’s “risky” to leave a stable, full time job to pursue your own dream business…I think it’s absolutely ABSURD to spend 40+ hours a week counting down the minutes until you can leave the office, instead of focusing your time and energy on what you ACTUALLY want to do!!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I earned my graphic design degree from a top-ranking design program before moving on to receive my Master’s in the Business of Art & Design. After working for several high-profile fashion and lifestyle brands, I pursued my entrepreneurial dreams and started Thomfoolery Design Co. where I specialize in branding.

I think what sets me apart from others is that for me, the relationships I form are just as important as the art I create. My favorite thing about design is interacting with, collaborating with, and connecting with people. I love being able to take someone’s vision and bring it to life with my artwork! I get so invested in my clients and do everything I can to help them build a thriving business. Although it was risky, quitting my “day job” was the best thing I’ve ever done and it’s exactly why I’m so passionate about designing for other entrepreneurs.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I was born and raised in San Juan Capistrano, CA and it’s still my favorite place to hang out. If my best friend was visiting we’d spend the whole day in San Juan. We’d start off with a coffee at Hidden House, grab brunch at Ellie’s table (the veggie quiche is my absolute favorite) then we’d walk around Los Rios street and take a stroll through the Antique Barn (I’m an avid antique shopper!). We’d pop into Bueno Bueno for lunch before heading into San Juan’s quaint little movie theater to watch something. After the movie, we’d head to Mayfield for fun cocktails and an amazing dinner.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband Blake who has supported me and all my crazy dreams! Thank you for believing in me. I love you!
