We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarahi Caballero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarahi, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea arises from the need to work as a family without a daily routine and to have as much time as possible to be together and do the things we enjoy in life. 9 years ago I left the city of Tijuana with my husband, after learning that we were expecting a baby, we moved to a farmhouse on a mountain in the city of Tecate to live in tranquility and watch our son grow. My husband went to work in the city and I stayed to take care of my son and do my photography. I could easily adapt to the new lifestyle but spending hours a day away from my husband was hard, I wanted to do something together that we liked and make a living from it. We had a lot of night talks about thousands of things we could do but nothing convinced us. It was in one of those talks that the dream of the “horno de la montaña” was born.

What should our readers know about your business?
Horno de la montaña is a place to be away from the city noises, is a relaxing and special place surrounded by rocks and mountains. Is a humble house with a big backyard. Me and my husband cook calzone in a clay oven that we made with our own hands, we only use dry wood that we collect ourselves from the place. We start from zero, selling on business places in the city without any type of investment other than what was necessary to continue doing it day by day, it was difficult since we did not know if we would have any profit from this but perseverance has led us, after 4 years to be a stable food place in the patio of our house and we continue to serve people that visit us from all baja california and san diego, without losing the simplicity and warmth with which we cook from the beginning.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely took them to la Rumorosa, it’s an awesome and magical place, beautiful landscape full of rocky mountains and very near is vallecitos, an archaeological site where you can walk in the nature and see cave paintings, it’s a long walk and perhaps a stop to eat some tacos de guisado el negro, delicious home made tortillas, on the way back its panadería el chipo, in my opinion the best sweet bread in Tecate. and i would take them for a walk in the place i live that use to be kumiai lands where we can find different petroglyphs, i have always found the magic of Tecate in the big rocks and all the nature and tranquility we are surround. There are so many places to eat in Tecate, for example the barbacoa at pueblo nuevo restaurant, my favorite!, i also like eI lugar de nos, delicious food and deserts, there is this new place call mil78 in a small town el hongo in the middle of nowhere. For a tasty beer is Kabrewna brewery, a nice place to drink a good craft beer with friends, and for a delicious cup of coffee the acento coffee roasters, we couldn’t miss the Tortas Ahogadas las Originales, they are so good! also the shrimp tacos at tacos casi miro. Of course i’ll cook some delicious arrachera and shrimp calzoni at horno de la montana my very special place and invite them the home brew beer from la montaña made by my husband or some wine by the kumiai community cava kak nua.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Arturo Crosthwaite, has been the work of two from the beginning, we have been the mutual support and balance that we need in everything that has to do with horno de la montaña and personally inspires and supports me to do what i love most, photography.
