We had the good fortune of connecting with Samuel Goldsworthy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Samuel, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in North County San Diego. My earliest memory was going to work with my father, who was an automotive mechanic, I used to hide in my dads snap on tool box, I was probably three years old, so needless to say I was raised in an industrial environment. My father even owned his own shop in Vista for a few years. My Grandfather is also an entrepreneur and owns an automation fabrication company, some of his projects include, food and beverage packing machinery and I grew up helping him out also. His real passion is preforming magic professionally, sometimes seen at the Magic Castle! I was immersed in this environment of self-made, hard working, engineer minded, and get it done/figure it all while being self funded. We never had a lot of money growing up and anything we had was “if you can fix it you can have it”. As a young kid, I would spend my time wrenching on anything with wheels and an engine so I could go ride. To this day I have a big passion for dirt biking and consider myself a gear head.

I knew early on in life the end goal was to work for myself one day. With that goal in mind, I left high school early to get my feet on the ground and chase my passion of working with my hands and to get in where I fit in type of thing. It’s been a hustle ever since and I spent several years working on everything mechanical under the sun, from fixing anything small engine, to getting my first welder at age 12. I worked at automotive shops and welding here and there for years as side work. September of 2018 I finally took the plunge with not a whole lot of cash and started out on my own. I love owning my business and its a dream and a struggle at the same time but I wouldn’t change a thing.

What should our readers know about your business?
Sam Industries, Inc. is a licensed welding contractor and metal fabrication shop. Having a diverse background in everything from automotive to construction to sheet metal/weldment manufacturing has aided in the success of the business. I own and operate the company and offer individualized attention on every project, by taking on a select number of projects a year I am able to turn out the best quality of work and have my hands on every project that comes in and goes out. I consider myself a people person and enjoy interacting with my clients, I will always answer my phone and respond to client emails directly, client and vendor satisfaction is of the utmost importance.

I strongly believe in maintaining good relationships and will never pass up an opportunity to network! One of the biggest struggles is being self funded and self made, so it takes double the effort to keep up with the behind the scenes work that has to take place when owning a business. The risks are riskier but also more rewarding, I have invested all my energy, finances, and personal life into keeping my company running so it’s difficult to separate work from my free time, it all kind of blends together but my work is my passion!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is my favorite place on earth. A perfect week would include riding dirt bikes in Ocotillo Wells, off roading into Fish Creek, then hiking around Anza Borrego. Inspiration Point has some amazing views and the Calcite Mines hike is a must do. Carlee’s in Borrego Springs is a great spot for a good bite to eat and cocktails, they usually have a live band on the weekends and it’s always a good time. The park offers plenty of solitude with dispersed camping opportunities and there’s miles and miles of off road trails to explore, we find something new every time we go out. As an outdoor enthusiast there is no end to what you can get into!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Welding Business Owner’s Hand Book: How to Start, Establish and Grow a Welding Or Manufacturing Business Book by David Zielinski. This book offered all of the guidance and steps on going out on your own.

Growing up my Grandfather and Father were a huge source of inspiration in being a business owner. Along the way my now wife, Madeline, and my sister in law, Katrina, were a huge source of love and support in establishing my business and obtaining my C-60 welding contractors license.
