Meet Sadie Enke | Founder of Petal and Bark & Nurse

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sadie Enke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sadie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always known that I have an entrepreneurial spirit, it just took a while to discover which product or service I would enjoy providing. My mother is a second generation florist, and once she showed me how to make wreaths and arrange flowers, it really just clicked! I found that I enjoyed the process, the products were turning out well, and it felt right to pursue this as a business because I love crafting wreaths and candles. Creating these handmade products is easier for me to start as a small business and grow into something bigger so it was an endeavor I could realistically take on while keeping my primary job as a nurse. Building a business and developing a brand has been incredibly fulfilling and it’s been a joy to watch it grow.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Petal and Bark is an online specialty home decor and candle store. We stand apart because of our focus on creating modern, chic products that cultivate a feeling of home in your environment. I am most proud of our fresh take on traditional decor. Wreaths and candles are classic home decorations but have not been reimagined in a long time. The time has come for the chic wreath revolution! Each of our wreaths are handmade using high quality products and special designs that are not available anywhere else. We believe that creating beautiful candles and wreaths requires the utmost precision to detail. While designing our products, I have learned that creating an elegant yet durable design is no small feat, which is why we test our products thoroughly and maintain a high standard for our ingredients. All of our candles are made with natural products and have beautiful containers so they also feel like a piece of home decor.
Home is where we go to retreat and relax. With Petal and Bark, it’s easy to create a sanctuary that reflects your chic style.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are endless places to show someone who is visiting San Diego! If it was their very first time to California, I would take them to the essentials: La Jolla, Sunset Cliffs, Coronado, Torrey Pines, and local neighborhoods like North Park, South Park, and University Heights. For food and drinks, I would take my friend to Beshock in East Village for ramen, The Red Door for the best authentic Italian food, and The Lion’s Share for cocktails and eats. One of my favorite things to do it check out local coffee shops as well like Storymakers, Dark Horse, and Communal. This is just a start- there are so many great things to see, do, eat, and drink in San Diego.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I really love this question, none of us would have gotten to where we are alone and it’s so important to recognize the help we’ve received along the way. In my case, my husband has been an absolute rock and supporter of me taking risks and pursuing my personal dreams. He is there to help me think through my ideas and gives me the encouragement to bring them to fruition. Both my mom and dad are entrepreneurs and inspired me to start my own business. My mother is especially important in my journey since she is the one who taught me the craft of making wreaths and working with flowers. I am so grateful for the support they’ve given me and one day I hope to play a similar role in someone else’s story.
