We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Ashburn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been attracted to / fascinated with what goes on behind the cameras to make a professional film. Ever since a kid I found myself more interested in behind the scenes footage than the actual films. As I got older I started filming skateboarding videos with my buddies in middle school then go home & spend countless amounts of hours editing our skateboarding videos. I was never fully pleased with my projects even though I felt I was giving everything I had. That motivated me to keep at it and stay productive. I’ve still got much to learn but I know where i’m headed. I couldn’t imagine myself choosing any other career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Something that sets me apart from others in this field of work was my willingness to work for free in order to gain the experience and confidence in my product. Once I received the feedback I was looking for I decided to step it up and charge no less than $50 for a music video. You are your worst enemy! One of the biggest challenges i’ve faced and continue to deal with is doubting my own ability. Don’t overthink it too much. Get out there and handle that sh*t!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It would start off with a trip to the best recreational dispensary in San Diego! SDRC! Then make way down to the South Mission Beach jetty (if you know you know). Then end the day at LXMB to show off the HQ and production studio!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If it weren’t for my family & close friends with their endless support I definitely wouldn’t be as motivated as I am today. My brother, Aaron Ashburn has been my backbone recently when it comes to assisting with production and keeping things running smoothly. I couldn’t thank him enough for everything he’s done. Lastly, I want to give a huge shoutout to my family at LXMB RECORDS. The best independent record label based out of San Diego who recently just picked me up as their Head of Video Production. TayDiddy & DreDaKingpen are the owners of the label. They are so dedicated and some of the most hardworking people i’ve met since I began my career in video production. I’m incredibly grateful to be working for LXMB. We’re rapidly growing and always on the lookout for local talent.
