We had the good fortune of connecting with Ry & Skyla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ry & Skyla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Both of us are community builders, and it’s important to us to have a creative outlet. We love bringing people together, and sharing the things we love with others.
While this wasn’t our plan when we made our first video for SometimesCastles, over the last year this channel hasn’t just been a fun creative outlet for the two of us to share together, but we’ve also grown as a part of the Disney creator community.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
With any creative pursuit, we believe the first 20% is fun and exciting, and the next 80% of the project is work.
We’re willing to put in the work. In our opinion, that’s the difference between people that succeed in creative industries, and those that don’t. While not every hour we spend on our creative projects is “fun,” we always push to keep going and finish projects once we’ve committed to them.
Currently, the two of us each work day jobs that we love, and keep us each busy for about 40 to 50 hours each week. In addition to that, we each spend around 40 to 50 hours a week on tasks related to SometimesCastles.
By just looking at how we spend our hours each week, over the last couple of years our work/life balance may look like we have no free time. That being said, we’re working on projects for things we’re passionate about, and what we’re building for SometimesCastles never feels like “going to work.”
Consistency, positivity, and community building seem to be the biggest factors behind our current success. We come to SometimesCastles with intent each day – from the number of posts we do each day (and the data behind why), to the types of videos we make and the tone we set – it’s all done with a larger purpose and goal in mind.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’re local to Orange County, California so we love to hit up spots on the beach – especially for a weekend brunch. You can find us taking our friends to farmer’s markets, comedy shows, and local breweries. We appreciate the kind of tourism that is more “live like a local” so we take people to places we love!
And of course, Disneyland. Always Disneyland!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We have made a lot of amazing friends within the TikTok community, and we’re thankful to all of them for sharing their time, energy, and knowledge with us as we try to figure this out together!
But specifically, we’d love to shout out Jose and Baileigh (@eat.sleep.positivity), and Sherief (@thejungleskipper). Not only are they peers within this niche, but they have become great friends.
