We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
As an indie author, I quickly discovered that there is a large gap in the marketplace for reliable, reasonably priced author services, such as cover design, editing, and interior page formatting. Most new authors don’t know where to turn to get these things done and often fall victim to predatory self-publishing companies. I began offering my expertise in these areas to other authors, and word spread quickly, mostly through some of the Facebook writing groups, and a business was born.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Seneca Author Services for a few reasons…most authors just want to write books. They don’t want to spend time learning complex software like Adobe InDesign to format the book, or they don’t have the design skills, or tools, to create compelling covers. Typically, when a writer is finished writing their manuscript, they do an internet search for publishers, and are bombarded with predatory self-publishing companies who only exist to separate authors from their money.
Seneca Author Services exists to provide the elements of a successful, professional-looking book. And, just as importantly, it won’t cost them a ridiculous amount of money. Too many companies are looking to get rich off authors’ backs, taking advantage of their desire to be published. They over-promise, grossly over-charge, and vastly under-deliver.
My focus is providing a finished product the author can be proud of, at a reasonable cost.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Visiting Southern California is on my bucket list, but, alas, I haven’t made it there yet, so don’t have any recommendations.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Carolyn Jarecki is a close friend I’ve known since high school and when she discussed with me her desire to write a book in conjunction with her life coaching business, I realized there weren’t a lot of resources to recommend. She had established an online/phone life coaching business and was eager to get some of her principles into book form. She had no idea how to turn her manuscript into a finished book, and that’s where I came in. I edited and proofread her manuscript, formatted the interior pages, and created the cover design. When it was complete, I assisted in the upload process to Amazon’s KDP platform, and she was now a published author (Your Best Kid in 21 Days, Carolyn Jarecki, M.A., BCC).! We’ve worked on multiple projects now, and her appreciation and support has meant the world to me.
