We had the good fortune of connecting with Regina Key and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Regina, why did you pursue a creative career?

After years of working on a studio backlot, supporting several departments with administrative and marketing tasks, I transitioned to working on TV and film productions. This shift allowed me to immerse myself in the creative process, witnessing firsthand how imagination could be transformed into reality. It was fascinating to observe how a team of dedicated individuals could bring creative ideas to life, each contributing their unique skills and expertise to the project. The collaborative environment fostered innovation and creativity, making every production a testament to the power of teamwork.

The world of events is much like the world of TV and film production in that way. Both require meticulous planning, coordination, and a shared vision to create memorable experiences. At Destination Concepts inc., I have been able to tap into all of my skillsets, leveraging my graphic design background, marketing experience, and passion for seeing creative concepts brought to life. Each day presents new opportunities to apply my diverse talents, whether it’s designing eye-catching visuals, crafting compelling marketing strategies, or supporting our team to ensure the event aligns with the overarching creative vision. I am very fortunate to have landed at a company that supports creatives and recognizes the value we bring to the table, fostering an environment where innovation and creativity can thrive.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My goal at Destination Concepts Inc. is to build a brand that appeals to clients, supplier partners, our team, and future team members. Originally, my role was solely focused on marketing and creative services. As my role evolved into Creative Director, I was able to manage and work hand in hand with creatives across departments: design, experience development, business development, and marketing. It was extremely fulfilling to support the teams directly responsible for creating the engaging event experiences we pitched to clients.

When I stepped into the role of Senior Director and became part of the Executive Team, my focus shifted to maintaining DCi’s brand integrity for both clients and employees. I strive to stay ahead in a highly competitive marketplace by embracing necessary changes and continually evolving, all while staying true to our core values.

The events industry is an ever-evolving space, and success relies upon the willingness to embrace change. Change and new ideas have never been something I shy away from. Creativity is all about trying something new, and I have been fortunate to work within a company that shares the same idea. Since joining DCi in 2003, we have created new departments and roles, added a wealth of services, and along the way, it has been my responsibility to ensure our clients were informed and that our team shared a positive outlook for all the new opportunities change can create!

Today, I love seeing the incredible work produced by our team, but what really excites me is when I hear clients remarking about our creative ideas and how our team blends seamlessly with theirs. By fostering a supportive workplace, we are able to help our team shine, both at work and home, and our clients see it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Fun! These are the must-sees that I let anyone know about when visiting San Diego. I am a North County gal (shout out to Solana Beach!) so my suggestions start there. A hike in Torrey Pines is a must and afterwards hit Viewpoint Brewery in Del Mar where you can eat and drink with views of the lagoon. The 101 in Encinitas is filled with rad shops and restaurants. Taco Stand is a favorite and prepare for a long line but it’s all worth it. The Crack Shack in Encinitas is a family favorite – hands down the BEST gluten free fried chicken I have ever had.

A true local gem in my neck of the woods is Tony’s Jacal in Solana Beach’s Eden Gardens neighborhood. It’s been open since 1946 and their nachos and margaritas are out of this world.

In San Diego proper, I love Balboa Park. My wedding was at the San Diego Museum of Art, so Balboa Park is a special place to me. It’s so unique to San Diego and has something for everyone. It’s a beautiful spot to grab a bite and relax, see a museum, people watch, hike, it really has it all.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Brynne Frost & Ana Reilly – founding owners at Destination Concepts inc. They have supported my creative process and trusted me with their brand for over 20 years!
