Meet Rebeca Sheehan | Rebeca Sheehan | CEO & President, Verde Design Group Landscape Architects, Inc. | Entrepreneur & Advocate for Women in Business

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebeca Sheehan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebeca, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success—and the success of Verde Design Group Landscape Architects, Inc.—has been a combination of hard work, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning. After over 25 years as an entrepreneur, stepping into the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry was both exciting and challenging. It was a completely different world from my past experiences, but I approached it with the same curiosity, resilience, and dedication that have always guided me.
I also knew that I needed help, and that’s why I took the initiative to research and seek out guidance. Through this journey, I was fortunate to find Cheryl Brown from SBDC, who became an invaluable guide in helping me understand procurement, certifications, and government contracting. Her expertise and mentorship helped me navigate the complexities of obtaining certifications such as WBE (Women Business Enterprise), MBE (Minority Business Enterprise), WOSB (Women-Owned Small Business), and Section 3 HUD.
One of the key steps in adapting to this new industry was leveraging resources and partnerships. I worked closely with SBA, SBDC, and APEX Accelerator, all of which played a crucial role in helping Verde Design Group organize our certifications and position ourselves for public sector opportunities.
In addition to mentorship and networking, I also recognized the importance of formal business education. I enrolled in several programs that completely transformed the way I approach business. Two that stood out were:
*Calmentor San Diego Program, which provided invaluable insights into the AEC industry, government contracting, and public-sector work.
*10K Goldman Sachs Long Beach Business Program, which helped me develop financial strategies, leadership skills, and sustainable growth models for my firm.
These programs not only expanded my knowledge but also gave me the tools and confidence to navigate complex business landscapes with a strategic mindset.
These certifications and educational experiences have opened doors for Verde Design Group, allowing us to compete in the public sector while maintaining the high-quality design and service that we are known for. More importantly, this journey has reinforced the idea that success is not about knowing everything from the start, but about having the willingness to learn, pivot, and surround yourself with the right people and resources.
I believe that growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones—and this experience has been a testament to that. I am incredibly grateful for the mentors, partners, and organizations that have supported me along the way, and I look forward to continuing to build, learn, and contribute to this industry.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Verde Design Group Landscape Architects, Inc. is more than just a design firm—it is a reflection of my commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community impact. Our focus is on creating outdoor spaces that are not only visually stunning but also functional and environmentally responsible. Whether designing parks, urban landscapes, or commercial spaces, we approach every project with a deep understanding of how people interact with their surroundings and how we can enhance their experience.
What excites me most about our work is the opportunity to transform spaces in a way that brings people together. Landscape architecture isn’t just about plants and hardscapes—it’s about creating environments where memories are made, where people gather, and where nature and urban life coexist harmoniously. Seeing a project come to life, knowing that it will positively impact a community for years to come, is incredibly rewarding.
Getting to where I am today was not easy, and the path was anything but linear. I’ve had to pivot, adapt, and continuously learn. One of the biggest challenges was navigating the public-sector and government procurement space, which requires a level of expertise, patience, and persistence that I had to develop. I approached this by asking questions, seeking mentorship, and putting in the work to master the industry’s complexities.
One key lesson I’ve learned is that relationships are everything. Success isn’t just about knowing your craft; it’s about collaborating, building trust, and forming meaningful partnerships. Throughout my career, I’ve built strong connections with other entrepreneurs, industry experts, and organizations that support small businesses, and these relationships have been invaluable in opening doors and creating opportunities.
Another important lesson is that fear should never hold you back. As a woman and a minority business owner, I’ve had moments of doubt, moments where I questioned whether I belonged in certain spaces. But I’ve learned that if you show up, do the work, and believe in your vision, you create your own place at the table.
At Verde Design Group, we don’t just design landscapes—we build legacies. I want the world to know that our firm is here to make a lasting impact, to elevate the industry with fresh ideas, and to pave the way for other small businesses, particularly women- and minority-owned firms, to thrive. There is room for all of us, and my hope is to continue creating opportunities—not just for our company, but for others who are looking to make their mark in this industry.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Success is never a solo journey, and I am deeply grateful for the people who have supported, encouraged, and believed in me along the way. I want to dedicate this shoutout to my mom, Lydia Beltran, and my children, Felipe, Johnny, Jacob, and Daniel, who have always stood by me, believing in me and my vision, no matter how ambitious my ideas or projects have been. Their unwavering love and motivation have pushed me to strive for more, overcome challenges, and continue growing as an entrepreneur and leader.
Because of the support I have received, I am passionate about giving back and uplifting other Latina women in business. That’s why I am honored to serve on the board of the National Latina Business Women Association (NLBWA), where I can help mentor, empower, and create opportunities for other women navigating their own entrepreneurial journeys.
This journey has been shaped by the incredible people in my life, and I truly believe that when we uplift each other, we all succeed.
