We had the good fortune of connecting with Randy Lam and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Randy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is extremely important in my opinion. I think living in a constant state of comfortability can be dangerous, because you can never grow in any aspect of your life, especially your career. Personally, as a model, I strive to take risks because that is the only way for me to put myself out there in order to align with the right people which would in tern propel my career. Another big risk was moving to California. Knowing that I would leave my family behind and move to a completely new territory with new people and new norms, it’s safe to say that this decision is a huge risk. However, I wouldn’t change it for the world because I was able to pursue my dreams as a model and continue my growth as an individual. I strive to be comfortable in the uncomfortable.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started to seriously pursue modeling about a year and a half ago. What really drew me to this profession was how much you can use your differences your flaws, all those things that make you different to your advantage, and to be a part of something bigger, such as art. To use my body as a form of art is something that has always, interested me. As a non-binary individual who is also Asian, black, androgynous, fem-presenting, and overall just an individual with what society deems as not “normal”, it’s safe to say what should be my “flaws” is actually my superpower. My superpower is that there is no one out there quite exactly like me because I am so different from what is deemed normal. When it comes to the fashion industry, I believe this is a huge advantage because I can add such a different type of value to whichever brand/designer, that would want to work with me. Of course, this always comes with its challenges because in this industry, it’s still much more important to fit in a box (I.e. male or female). However, times are changing and clothing is becoming less binary and just clothing that everyone can wear and enjoy. Fashion is a form of expression and it should not be attached to a particular gender. Getting to where I am today was no easy feet but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Life has taught me that when you embrace who you are, all your flaws and insecurities, you are free. And freedom is liberation. And when you are liberated, nothing can stop you. I want the world to know that through all the trials and tribulations life has put me through. I have been able to pivot, and become who I am today. I am still growing as a person, because life comes with many lessons to which there are many lessons to learn, but as of thus far, I am a strong, independent, beautiful and intelligent person who has more than capable of doing whatever I set my mind to.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First I would take you to Morning Glory, which is a super cute brunch spot in downtown San Diego. I would then take you to all the cool beaches around town like pacific beach’s beach and blacks beach. Lastly I would take you to Raised by wolves, which is a speakeasy type bar then dinner at Ironside which is a seafood spot in downtown.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shot out to my family. They have been nothing but supportive of my life and my passion of becoming a model. They understand the risks that come with it, yet then support me anyways. I couldn’t be more grateful to have such people in my corner that cheer me on. I also would like to shoutout my chosen family here in San Diego. They have also become some of my biggest supporters and always keep me humble/grounded in reality. I couldn’t be luckier to be surrounded by such lights in my life despite my biological family being thousands of miles away.
