Meet Rachel Samala | Owner, Miss Minisplit

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Samala and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success has been my level of perseverance. I’ve gotten this far on little talent or intelligence. Grit and the genuine desire to be of service have been the main things that keep me going.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
One thing that sets me apart from others is my compassion. If you tell me your sob story, I will totally fall for it. I’m really proud of my business in general and the fact that it even exists. If you told me when I was 20 years old, in college and struggling to feed myself, that I would be the CEO of an HVAC company at 32, my head would’ve actually exploded. The hardest part about getting where I am was learning the trade. The first few years of HVAC was so difficult mentally and physically. I worked 16 hour days frequently. And the mental load made me doubt myself so much that I wanted to quit every day. But I did not. In fact I took my inclination to quit and used it as motivation to have even more perseverance. I knew that five or 10 years down the road I would not struggle as much. And I was right. So I got through these challenges by continue to show up every day and giving it my best shot. One valuable lesson I’ve learned along the way is to let the professionals do their job and professionals should only do their job. I do HVAC and that’s all I should do. Don’t hire me to do your plumbing or drywall even though I can. And don’t hire your plumber to install your HVAC even though he can. One interesting thing about my business is that I offer contractor mentorship. I like to hire people who would like to become licensed contractors that themselves and I will teach them the process and how to run a business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A weeklong trip in San Diego? There are so many places that you could go to in a day that I don’t know if there’s enough room on this page to list it all. Actually, I don’t know places to eat off the top of my head because I just pick someplace from a list of best places to eat in San Diego. Half the places I like to eat I don’t even know what they’re called, I just know where they are. San Diego has a handful of Michelin star restaurants and one restaurant here has three stars. I would definitely have to at least recommend a fishing trip out of the harbor, renting kayaks to tour the La Jolla coves, checking out the Hotel Del, Legoland if you have kids, and the roller coaster at Belmont Park.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Joe Morrison, Morrison HVAC&R, Tom Davies, Sunspot Solar & HVAC, Guy Evans, PLS Framing, New California Restoration, KSH Construction, Bradford Fox Builders and Jose Gomez.
