We had the good fortune of connecting with Peter Paul Tinkasiimire and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Peter Paul, how do you think about risk?
We tend to view risk-taking negatively, often regarding it as dangerous and even unwise. But while some risks certainly don’t pay off, it’s important to remember that some do. Re-framing risk as an opportunity to succeed rather than a path to failure is something that I ultimately believe. The biggest risk that I have taken in my life is career choice, as I grew up my family wanted me to either be an architect or engineer. However after my high school education, I decided that I will be a Photographer and Filmmaker. This was a huge turning point but its worth it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a photographer & filmmaker, I look out for the smallest details that would impact change in one way or another and most importantly I do it in a way which is humane enough not to degrade my culture and my people. The most exciting part of my career is when I make interactions with different communities since I’m always on the move, exploring new cultures, creating new friends and understanding humanity. My journey to becoming a professional photographer wasn’t an easy one especially in a set up which is not friendly to cameras but regardless of all that, I never give up and I keep shooting. The industry has taught me that no one knows it all, help each other out and succeed together. There is no such thing like selfishness along the journey to success as a photographer and filmmaker.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a great lover of nature and my favorite tourism destination would be Fort Portal in the western part of Uganda which also doubles as my home town. Ranging from the beautiful nature walks around the many crater lakes to the breath taking views of the rift valley.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The biggest contributors to my career are Joseph Muhumuza a.k.a Sagio Mhza, Amos Ategeka & Katumba Badru Sultan. When it comes to organizations, I dedicate this shout out to Imagine Her – IH headed by Nathan Okiror.
